I have been playing Soldier of Fortune out on the net. It is telling me my ping is 23. Is that good? What tolerances should I be looking for or expecting?

Yeah a 23 ping is quite good, you're on a great server. Broadband rarely gets much better, the best I've had was 17. Broadband should yield you pings from what you see, to 40, 60, 80....once past 80 you're playing on a server that your ISP has a poor connection to, get past 100 - 120 and you're getting into 56k modem territory...I'd go look for another server at that point.
DONT MAKE SENCE IF U GOT A NETWORK THAT IS 500KBPS AND U R PINGIN AT 300KBPS AND ON A GOOD DAY U PING AT 450KBPS WHAT IS THAT ABOUT THEN

Actually what you're saying doesn't make sense. Ping is measured in milliseconds.... so when you say "My ping is 23", or "my ping is 125"...that is in "ms". When you say "kb/s"....that is a transfer rate...how much data per second. Ping...milleseconds...the time time it takes for a data packet to travel from your computer..to a server...and back again...like a sonar signal.
Now, if indeed your ping fluctuates from 300 ms one day to 450 ms another day....that is the result of many things. Your ISP...how busy are they? Cable users are very subject to this...middle of the day or early evening...when the whole world is online...your ISP and the internet gets very busy. Remember, your ISP only has so much bandwidth, only has equipment to handle so many concurrent users....so when a lot of users log on....your ISP gets a bit bogged down. And that affects your ping, and that is what separates the good ISPs from the bad.
its not bad under 200:) playable, always...just need to anticipate more...i play about 150-200 everywhere....just poor routing and isp.

///remembers those "dial up days"......chuckles a bit///
Yea i rember thank god for brodband
obviously u guys have been blessed with decent high speed.
i've had two different providers, and the first sucked ass...but better than what i have now...essentially the same speeds "theoretically" but terrible terrible routing can ruin any high speed connection...no i dont have dial up...not will i have it:) but dont be fooled by all the "high speed" hype...some providers are excellent, some are wretched...be careful what u get, and dont put up with bull**** from them either.
now that makes sense ,, oh and i see what you mean now ,, ping and kbps r completly different ,sry ,,
