Up until just recently I have been very happy with the way my new computer handles online games, and my favorite is Ultima Online. I play on the Atlantic server if anyone here can relate to that. First off I've had RoadRunner for the past 3 years now and I have noticed that the more users RoadRunner gets that it has been gradually slowing down since I first got it. When I first got RoadRunner my speeds were incredible, and just recently have they plummeted dramatically. Real late at night and early in the day my connection is superb, I get great speeds. For some reason Ultima Online has really been acting up lately, and I get so much lag I can barely even play the game. My system specs are these:
Windows ME
900mhz Athlon 200mhz bus
768 MB SDRAM
32 MB nVidia GeForce 256
RR Cable connection
40.0 GB 7200RPM HD
LinkSys Router which hooks up my computer with RR and my old computer in the other room
I have tried virtually everything I can think of on many different websites. I have tried every faster connection speed patch off of speedguide.net which applies to me with no resolution. I have also tried manually going into the registry and altering the values of the DefaultRcvWindow and MaxMTU. I also did some researching and found that RR is capable of sending 1472, and I put the MaxMTU to that, then I changed it to 1500 which speedguide.net told me to. I also talked to a RR technician and I confirmed that they do not use PPPoE connections, so that narrowed some tweaks out. I also edited the web browser settings to load faster, which really seemed to help. I also did speedguide.net's TCP/IP analyzer, and it said everything was fine except for my MaxMTU values. But, since I have a router that automatically makes it transfer less, and just to compare something I unhooked the router and made sure that Ultima Online still lagged with it unhooked, and I was right. There was no difference, the lag was still bad as ever with and without the router hooked up. I have even tried raising my Virtual Memory in the Windows settings to see if it was on the client side of things, and I also enabled frame skipping which Ultima Online technicians said would help reduce lag. I have nearly exhausted web sites to look for help and I have talked to RR technical representatives, and nothing seems to work. I did a Ultima Online traceroute to see where my packets were being lost, and some of it was with RR and some of it was with the Ultima Online servers. Does anyone out there have another suggestion for me? I am willing to try anything right about now. Thanks.
