I posted here last week to get some help for my bad pings for counter-strike. i downloaded cablenut, speedguide patches, and the @home patch. it worked very well for the LAST WEEK...but then all of the sudden yesterday my 90 pings I had, jumped to 300-900. :mad:

i have @home and I have it routed to 3 other computers using a Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch. I even put my IP address in the DMZ zone, so that I am exposed to the internet directly.

i dunno what the problem is...when i test my speed at http://speedtest.umnet.umich.edu/ i continually get dl speeds of 1000-1300 kbps....but when i am in game server located near my location i get the 300-900 ping.

my system specs are
Pentium 4 - 1.5 ghz
128mb ram
40gb hd
EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch
Netgear FA311 Fast Ethernet PCI Adapter
os = Windows ME

here is my TCP/IP analyzer results:

TCP options string = 020405b40103030401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 607360
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 4 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 37960
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 24294.4 kbps (3036.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 9717.76 kbps (1214.72 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 55 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

You DON'T want to exposed directly to Internet due to Security problems. I seriously suggest that off with it. You may be getting Horriable Pings because your Area is affected by Virus. Read the article below to see how you can prevent that.

A computers in the LAN have gone through a virus search. Modem light ddoes blink quite a bit.

Would having a dynamic IP have any affect? I think my DHCP expired yesterday.

The virus are sending tons and tons of emails back and forth through your local network, so your Ping is most likely going through the roof. Best thing you can do is to protect your computer so that it wouldn't be another victim.
