I just did a format on my computer and didnt install the @home software they give you when you get the modem. I know it changes some settings for better preformance when you install it. Well I don't want to install there software. What can I do to make my settings at top preformance for my cable modem? By the way I use a Linksys router. Surfing is speedy but downloading seems to be slow. :( Thanks for your time.

First of all, Welcome to speedguide. You need to download Cablenut and Speedguide patches according to your OS. Both links are in my sig below. Install Cablenut first before installing the tweaks. You also need to take a TCP/IP test listed on the top of the page, and paste your results here.:)

I've heard alot of things but not this, it's not true , if you like, their are step by step instructions on help thread below:)

Alright. I want to take a test before I tweak things. You said the TCP/IP test was at the top of the page... I don't see it... :(

Doh! Here you go :) Remeber I'm on a Linksys Router.
-----------------------------------------------------------
TCP options string = 0204059c01010402

MTU = 1476
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.

MSS = 1436
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1436, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 8616
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 8616
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
505472 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
252736 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
126368 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
63184 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 344.64 kbps (43.08 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 137.856 kbps (17.232 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 117 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

You have a router, go to web site of router maker and install lastest firmware:)

Patch is not installed, read on patch page how to install :)Cablenut installed first, directions on help thread below

I just installed the latest firmware upgrade and took the test again and here is what I got.
-----------------------------------------------
TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 8760
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 8760
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 350.4 kbps (43.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 140.16 kbps (17.52 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

According do the test the firmware upgrade increased performance. I downloaded cablenut and installed and I was getting 30 kb/sec while downloading the cablenut software :( That is what it was like before I formatted too. :mad: Surfing seems speedy, but downloading things it's not. I did read the help file, and I didnt really know what to do first. :confused: Do you know why I'm getting so slow downloads? Because before I did a format I called @home and they did tests and evertying and said everything is running good. They said it could be my software that isnt allowing Windows to get the full poential amount of bandwidth that @home services is providing me with. Any ideas what I should do? Or change with cablenut or etc...? Thanks for your time.

Speedguide patches are available in my sig below. find the one that suits your OS, download, unzip, install/Merge, and reboot. Post your System Specs here, also the TCP/IP test results. If you are on Windows 9x, please download the vtcp.386 patch just beneath the Speedguide Patches.:)

For Win 9x bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside icon on desktop in box that says Cablenut,click on adjuster, in box that says DefaultRvcWindow take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try: 51100, 513920, 522680, 524176 or 531440

Leave GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize blank
You do not have to show me but check analyzer here at SG to make sure RWIN is in, you will see number right after (RWIN) on analyzer
At bottom click save to registry, and REBOOT each time you change value in adjuster or it will not work.Click on tools at top of IE, internet options, delete files and offline files (This is safe, temp files) and click on clear history after EVERY test Quick speed test here (http://speedtest.umnet.umich.edu/)
Speedtest may open another browser, so check taskbar and close other one, no other programs should be running, No AIM, ICQ, Virus scanner, Firewall, nothing
Once you find fast number for you, you want to save it, on file at top of adjuster click on that, save custom settings, put RWIN size in as name and click on save, now if you ever want these settins back, click on file, open custom settings file, and click on RWIN number, then click on save to registry at bottom, and REBOOT, your done. How to do real dowwnload test on help thread below in signature. This is all I recommend, if anyone else jumps in with something else, good luck, but it did not come from me.:)

I found a good setting out of the numbers you provided for me too change. This was the best test result:
DefaultRvcWindow: 522680

Test running.....
** Speed 2420(down)/na **
(At least 48 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.

I went to adobe.com and downloaded the acrobat reader also to test download speed and for like a milisecond it said 957 kb/sec then it down to the 200 kb/sec of the rest of the download. By the last 5% it was in the 40 kb/sec range. It gradually dropped most of the download. Is there some reason for this? Are these the best settings for me?
