ok i know curiosity killed the cat, but i kept staring at the Windows XP iso on my comp and I just had to try it so now Im running XP. XP isnt compatiable with Direct X 8 tho which is needed to play some games. Is there anyway I can still play games like the new Wolfestein with xp?
xp comes with DX 8.1 installed I believe... and it is compatible as well...
try the windows 2000 Direct X 8

I dunno why my games crash when I'm playing... it stops responding... well, not really.. It just exits all of a sudden... What is that? Why does it happen? I have Windows XP with DirX8.1 and have 192MB RAM, Nvidia Aladdin TNT2 video card (has drivers XP came with)... CMI8738 sound card... PING, you seem to know your gaming stuff... what could be the problem?

Keep in mind that just because XP is officially released, doesn't mean it's stable at all. Are there other beta sets of drivers for your cards under XP.? Try those if they exist. This has worked for me several times on ATI and Nvidia cards in 2000 and XP.
I've tested 2 release candidates for XP, as well as the official release for compatability with several different applications and games. Some stuff runs, others cause random resets while playing the game, sometimes video goes out requiring a reboot to fix.
Networked databases run well, as does file stransfer stuff. But gaming on XP with some of the higher-end games caused me nothing but problems. Win 2K works quite well for games. Wait 6 months on XP and try a service packed version instead.
If you think it's direct X, reinstall 8.1, or force an earlier version(8.0, probably to be found on the CD for the game) to reinstall.

nowhere on the MS site can I find anything relating DirectX to XP. Even searching the directX site for "Windows XP" and the XP site for "DirectX".
On a happier note, I did find the application compatability pack for download from MSDN. Get it here: Application Compatability Toolkit for XP (http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?URL=/downloads/sample.asp?url=/msdn-files/027/001/685/msdncompositedoc.xml) I've used it in the past, and had some success figuring out what the issues were.
