Download/Upload which is better?

When you are hosting a multiplayer game which is more important upload speed or download speed. I have a 3mbps download / 100kbps upload cable connection. Is the upload speed hurting my serving/hosting capacity? Which is more crucial to hosting a multiplayer game upload or download speed? :confused:

Thats what matters...... but its good to have a balenced connection.

Yes absolutely upload. For figuring on optimal performance, take your tested benchmarked upload average, divide by 28, round that number up to the nearest whole number, and that's about your maximum amount of players that you can host with an optimum usage of your bandwith...whereas the next player past that number to log on will start eating into your bandwidth, and introduce lag to everyone else.

This was a rule of thumb from planetunrealtournament/theadminpage on hosting of servers, older games such as Quake2 and the likes don't use as much bandwidth, but most newer games use at least that much. Changes from game to game obviously, but gives you roughly an idea. Also what is acceptable performance to some isn't always to others...depends how picky you are.

I play Rainbow Six, Rogue Spear, Rogue Spear: Urban Operations, and Covert Operations, you could say that I'm a R6 gooroo! I also play Codename Eagle which is pretty cool.

Since upload is so important to hosting do any of you know how to increase my upload speed? I have plenty of download and I want to translate some of that into upload. Can anyone help me? My speeds are usually 3mbps download and 100kbps upload. Can somebody please help me with tweaking the upload settings thanks! :cool:

My computer settings are as follows: I have two computers- one I have Windows 98 and the other Windows 98 SE. My computer speeds are as follows Win98- Pentium II 450 MHZ, 256 Meg Ram, 64 meg Geforce 2 MX400. Win98 SE- Pentium III 600MHZ 256 Meg Ram, 16 Meg Video Card.

Ahh so nice to see a fellow R6 guru on these boards where Ut and CS reign lol. You more then likely have a cable connection. So you won't be able to get any faster upload. Sorry. The only option is to go get DSL or a faster Cable package that allows faster uploads. But no there is no program that will change ur ul and dl speeds. Hmm If ya ask me I think SG needs a good ol fashion R6 tourny for old times sake. R6 i still think owns lol. Sorry I couldn't help more.

Ditto...... Dsl is better if you want higher bandwith.......i never actually seen a cable company who would give more bandwith (upload) for more money

And it is to see a fellow rogue Spear fan here....thats the only i played.....

weeeeee...greetings fellow RS-UO-CO junkies. As I am too, all i see is UT or CS treads. I don't even open those up, :D

I am starting to get addicted to Operation Flashpoint though, very cool graphics and HUGE maps. When I go back to RS-UO, I feel clostrophobic sometimes in those maps, lol

Can't wait until Ghost Recon, that one looks very nice as well.

I too play R6. I have DSL and I still can't seem to get smooth game play. Also when ever I play a team game everyone seemes to go there own way. The sniper wars are fun but you have to have a good ping otherwise they see you before you see them.

Doubt the last thing about the sniper wars.......those are good snipers..... they spend less than a second with their head out...... with my 56k i was able to see the heads of the snipers.....mabye its your conn.... but with my 56k (i dissed every 2 minutes with it ) i could see every sniper..... i have cable and i still can.....I got smooth gameplay with 56k and cable.......

yea r6 is the best i dunno i got about the same cable as u man 3mb down and 128ks up sucks for hosten but great for joining lol but i could host 4 with my old pc wich was slower and and its 56k and now with my new pc and my cable i cant host more then 2 and my me messes with r6 and rs and all the other got them all like any other r6 fan any of u runing Me ass your Os ???
