After 2 nights of troubleshootig, researching, and phone tech support I finally was able to upgrade my rt311 firmware. I had always knew of the firmware releases but I could never ftp into my router like they said to do in the readme files.
Well, after talking with a level 1 tech for about an hour I got my firmware upgraded but my internet didn't work
she says i need to talk to a level 2 tech support guru but they don't work at the time i was calling. they are 6am - 6pm western.
she had showed me how to directly connect the router to a computer using a serial cable and then using hyperterminal to transfer the .bin and .rom files
i go to bed and call them again the next night
this time i give them my case number and ask for a level 2 tech. after waiting another 30min or so i get to him and he goes through the basics. he shows me how you have to spoof your router's ip so that it hides the network from my isp and then he tells me that after all that work last night, that i didn't install the latest firmware and that there was a later version (3.25)
however, with the 3.24 version that i installed the previous night i was able to ftp to the router without using the serial cable solution and upgrade to 3.25
then we redo the router ip spoof and he shows me how to use for forwarding with port ranges
i can now play all my games again and share file on aim and other messenger progs
I've always had great experiences with Netgear techs especially level 2 techs. The level 1 techs usually have a thick foreign accent and its hard to understand them but they are still helpful.
Just a pat on the back to netgear techs i guess.
