slow home network using 98

I have 2 windows ME machines networked, the connection between them is fast. When I connected a windows 98 to the network it runs VERY slow. Is there a way to fix this?

r u using netbeui ?? or tcp/ip?? have u the same nic cards as in the other machines?? is the 98 nic on half,? or full duplex? have u aloowed permissions bewteen the98 and the me computers?

I'm using tcp/ip. 3com 3c905b nics. permissions are allowed and i did not see where to set the duplex settings.
