My friend has a sweet cable connection running through a LinkSys router.

When he serves games they don't show up for anyone else, so I assume he has to forward the right ports...?

I found these ports that get used by HalfLife:

Half Life
IN UDP 6003
IN UDP 7002
IN UDP 27010
IN UDP 27015
IN UDP 27025

Half Life Server
IN UDP 27015

Now what? Is the HalfLife server number for anyone serving a game or only for a dedicated server? How do we tell LinkSys to open those ports? Open all of them, or just try one and then another? I have no newtworking knowledge, so if anyone could explain this "for dummies" then I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

open the router properties and go to advance ( i have the same router : ) ) once there go to forwarding there you ll find about 15 to 20 spaces to put data on the first one or whenever you want put on the first space the under the word service the sending port and in the following the reciver port then he has to specify the pc's ip so the data will be fowarded to the right pc if you have any question post it here i hope this help you

and about the ports i think that 27015 is for counter strike or i think it is used for other games i dont know
