oops, sorry wrong forum.
I've heard that Excel is the most powerful program around. You can actually rewrite the OS with it if you know what you're doing.

WHy would you use Excel for networking? that's a spreadsheet program...useful for accountants, I'm sure....but I would think network people would use networking programs.

:rotfl: lol, good one norm!. No joke drdoug99, Excel is a lot more than just a spreadsheet program. I can't go into the details, I'm not an Excel user, but I believe it has a built in C++ editor or something. Sorry, I can't remember anything about it. I could be a little off with this, but it's what I heard in a classroom setting years ago.
I heard of Excels capabilities a long time ago but never checked it out, I should have, it's supposed to be an amazing program.

The reason I ask is because I am in a networking cource right now and one of the instructors said something about Excel being the big program to use. I thought at the time he was out of his mind because I had only ever herd about it being used for spred sheets.
When Norm mentioned about it haveing a C++ editor I thought I remembered reading that somewhere too.
Anyone else know for sure?

Depends on the network.
We use a variety of progs here. Nortel's IBAM and Passport, Alcatel's 56020 and 46020, HPOpenView, etc. We don't use excel here.
These programs are very expensive and very good in there own ways. There's a very good chance that your teacher wont mention these. But he should.
Sorry I should also mention that we use these for very large networks MAN's and WAN's.
