View Full Version : Anyone have a Alcatel 1000 DSL modem?
Ive borrowed one from my buddy so that I can have dsl at a temporary residence. Trouble is that I cant get sync. Ive tried all the low level tech stuff to troubleshoot.
My question is do I have to have a special filter that goes on the outside of the house or can I use the small filters that go on each phone jack?
Bellsouth's local CO is checking my line today so I hope all is well when I go home for lunch.
I know this modem is good because my friend just used it a couple of weeks ago ( he has cable now).
Anyone have similar issues with the 1000 that can give me some tips? Or any advice as to what to ask the tech support folks at bellsouth to try?
Thanks in Advance,
Hieysk

I was having line snyc problems when I first got my dsl installed. A phone tech had to come and remove a "filter" on my phone box outside. The tech guy said the phone companies install these to monitor and test the phone line from the CO. After he removed it all was well. You may want to check it your self. Good luck I use bellsouth as well and dsl tech support could not figure it out. Just have a phone tech come out, if you have inside wire maintance they will not charge ya! Just call and report a problem with your phone line not dsl line

You don't need a filter or anything for your house
The filters are for the jacks that are used for your phones,,, without them you will hear static from the DSL modem. They are not for the modem, hook the modem directly to a phone jack, not through the filter.
Have they switched you at your phone company so you can use DSL????
If they have switched you possibly you are too far away from the switching station OR as per aileron172.
good luck

Misread the post of blacksword never mind
Yeah..
They have "flipped the switch for my hookup". Also, Im close to the CO (<1 mile) so that shouldn't be a problem.
The filter that you speak of? That sounds like it could be it. Im in an appartment so I really don't know where the heck my NID box is. However, Ill bring that up on my next of many tech support calls to Bellsouth.
Thanks..

No prob glad to help, I think you are going to like bellsouth there DSL speed is pretty consistant and customer service is top notch DSL techs could be a bit more helpful but I know they have it real rough. :) :)

If you are at a temporary site, you have to make sure that the number you are using to access the DSL connection is available to carry the DSL connection. Even through your neighbour is cappable of accessing DSL, it does not mean you can. Have a good day. If your number is accessible, then yes, you do need filters on any phone line with a phone or answering machine attached to it.
It turns out that this Acatel 1000 modem was designed to use the yellow and black pair of lines on a standard phone line. Since most homes use the first pair (green and red) this won't work. I had to get a "Line Switcher" to swap the lines at the modem. No I have sync and everything is fine.
You would think after 6 calls to tech support, someone on the help desk would know this.
Geez...
Thanks all,
Hieysk
