Keep in mind I know nothing. My internet connection is cable. I have a linksys 5 port switch. Both computers run ME. First computer is great. Second computers is really getting to me. I cant see the network or internet connection. Ive been through the setting 50 times ( I'm not kidding!). I've done everything but pitch the switch. Actully I was about to do that when I decided to connect the second computer dorectly to the cable modem. Guess what.......no friggin connection. So.........what I'm asking for is an idea of what I've done wrong here. Any help would be greatfull.

Thank You!

A couple of questions:

Who is your ISP?
Do they use workgroup/hostname or MAC address for identification?
Do you have a single or two ips from your ISP?
What protocols are installed and how are the bindings set?

I have ATT@HOME in Illinois.
They ask us to use workgroup @HOME
It is a DHCP set up so I have them set to Auto find
Connection is supposed to be by Computer Name
I have purchased a second ip although @HOME will not support my network in anyway and they will NOT help.

I'm going to try and give a bit more information here.
In properties for the second computer from my linksys switch:
IP tab obtian ip automatically is marked
WINS tab nothing is marked
Gateway tab nothing is marked
DNS tab disable DNS is marked

I really need some help here. I've searched and searched and can find nothing to help me with my problem.

Is my configuration wrong?
The switch sees the second computer but I cannot get the 2 computers connected together.

PLEASE HELP!

Original Post:

"Gateway tab nothing is marked"

Im pretty sure that you have to have your router ip address as the gateway (I.E. 192.168.0.1) Or whatever your router is.

Hope this helps,

If you say that nothing is checked on the WINS config tab, my bet is thats where your problem is. You need to check the box that says Use DHCP for WINS Resolution.

Well, since you hooked the 2nd computer up to the cable modem with no success, my suggestion would be to pitch the NIC in the 2nd computer and go get another one. At worst, you're out $10-$15.

FWIW - I do not have "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution" checked and my setup works find. I've got a laptop w/ Win 98 and a desktop w/ WinME running into a D-Link DI-704 router. Each computer can see the other and my wife and I can both surf the web at the same time if we want.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and I have nothing typed in on the Gateway tab either.
