Why doesn't the TCP Analyzer give me correct MTU/RWIN readings. I have already installed the patch for Win '98, but still it doesn't read properly ?

Actual MTU=1500 MaxRWIN=372300
This setting was the suggested setting from my ISP from their patch.

TCP options string = 0204058601010402

MTU = 1454
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput.

MSS = 1414
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1414, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is not fully optimized for broadband (although it might work well for slower connections). Consider increasing your MTU value.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 65535
Note: Under Windows 9x, if you have RWIN set to any other value, and the Analyzer reports 65535 you might need to install the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
520352 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
260176 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
130088 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
65044 (MSS x 46)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = OFF

Time to live left = 50 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

One reason is patch is not installed, read again how to install:)

Did you reboot your computer after installing the patch?

OK, I re-installed the vtcp386.exe patch and also tried to manually insert the vtcp.386 into systems and still TCP Analyzer still does not reconize the actual settings....whats going on here ?
anyone ???

MagicMikey: Yup I did reboot and many times too !

Kewl your in Montreal too :), I have Sympatico HSE what are you using ?

Please click in my signature where it says Test tweak here, then:
At top where it says edit click and select, Select all,
Then go back to same edit button at top, click and select copy.
Come back to Speedguide, same thread you were on, in post reply box, with cursor blinking at begining of box go to top, edit, click, select paste, click, this will put information in box. Please X out your IP address, Thank you.:)

Firstly, now that we know you're using ADSL on a Windows 98 machine, we can help you norrow down the problem a bit more. Here's a little snipplet I found while browsing http://www.sympatico.ca/ :

ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line, a type of DSL service with different (asymmetric) upstream and downstream capabilities. Detailed information is available from many websites.

Bell's Sympatico HSE "1-Meg" service is ADSL. However, it differs from more "traditional" ADSL services in a number of important ways. Note that Bell no longer offers its 2.2 megabit service for residential subscribers.

All of Bell's Sympatico HSE service users must use PPPoE to access the Internet. PPPoE stands for Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet. Since Bell's Sympatico HSE doesn't have a software package for Linux / Solaris user, you have to use third party PPPD / PPPOE daemon

So this means that you have to install Speedguide's PPPoE patch. This means that the actaul MaxMTU value should be set to 1492 and not 1500, even though Sympatico suggests you use 1500.

For now, try the Win 98 ME PPPoE patch and try the TCP/IP Analyzer again. Copy and paste your results...then we'll work from there....

BTW - I'm using Videotron Cable and I'm getting 2682kbps...after major tweaking of course ;)

Same as yesterday, different ways to get MTU up in help thread below, you MUST REBOOT every time you change a number:)

MagicMikey: OK I downloaded the patch sguide_tweak_98_pppoe.zip and installed it and rebooted and still no luck, all it changed from the original settings was the RcvWin to 255552 :(

I don't have much experience with DSL but in my Quest to learn about Sympatico, all the good stuff is reversed for paying members so I'm having a real hard time trying to find the root of the problem...

Do you have any broadband/DSL tweaking programs installed? It could possibly be that a program is reseting your MaxMTU back to default...Any bit of information you provide will help us a lot to figure out whats going on...

In the mean time, I suggest you read The Help Thread (http://forums.speedguide.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=46041) if you haven't already done so...

I have Cablenut installed, but I also check manually in the registry to see if the changes have been made.

The problem I have is that TCP Analyzer doesn't read the right set-up in my case, don't know why since I have already installed all thoose patches already.

MagicMikey
09-28-01, 11:36 PM
Heh, ok, did you install Cablenut before or after you installed the patches... I'm guessing before. Anyways, open up Cablenut and click on "Delete CableNut Tweaks" just in case you have them installed, then install the speedguide patches once again. This time, after rebooting, check the TCP/IP Analyzer again.....

I installed the patches before I installed Cablenut.

MagicMikey

Ok, because you have to install Speedguide's patches after you install CableNut.....

Read the Help Thread in Lobo's signature...

Still no cigar !: This what I did in order of sequence:

1. Installed Cablenut
2. Installed vtcp386.exe patch
3. Installed sguide pppoe patch
4. Reboot
5. Used TCP Analyzer

Finally got it ! woooohoooo, I had to manually change it the registry under LocalMachine/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/ Class/Net/002 (Max Frame Size)

How come none of the patches or Cablenut addresses this problem to this path in the registry ?

After 2 days of get DSl and from a ridiculous speed of just @77kbits on the first initial day to @900kbits on the second day is a big improvement. Thank-you guyz for all your help ! :)
