does anyone know what this means? is this why i get more lag in online gaming?

forgot to mention that i do have a cable connection

Your latency does seem a bit high, but it is rather consistent from the first hop all the way to the remote host. Are you running any applications on your PC, or in your network (if you have one in place) that are transferring data consistently? Examples: any server, FTP, HTTP, mail, Napster, EDonkey, Kazaa. If so, this is why your connection lags, and you need to turn off these applications in order to get optimal network response time when gaming.

Thanks for your insight...but i tried the tests a few more times without other applications running and the results were not any better....the results were actually worse and more inconsistent but this i asume is only because i did it a 5PM....yesterdays test was around 5AM

I know this is definately not normal...but i am not knowledgable enough to see what this means? i plan to call my isp but i need to be more informed..my logic says that my isp will not care about this since i get decent download speeds..but i am more into games than downloading

Yeah.. Your pings are yet more inconsistent now, since they range from 49ms to about 1021ms. Is your Internet line connected to an internal home network? If so, are you running any servers or are there any hosts within your network that may be creating the traffic? It seems to me like there is some kind of application running in the background that's taking up some considerable bandwidth. If not so, then I would need you to post several traces throughout different times of the day. That way I can assess if it's a problem with your equipment, or the node in your area.

i do have a home network but i have disconnected it and pluged the cable modem directly into my computer before each test....unless theres an invisible application that im not aware of there hasnt been any applications running in the background...i have tried many things within my home...including bringing my cpu into the basement plugging the main cable coming into the house directly into the modem...i have tried quite a few tweaks..including raising and lower the rwin...also tried reformatting installing various operating systems...dont seem to notice any slight difference during my tests...i am almost convinced the prob lies outside of my home...i think it is because i live in an area with a highly concentrated population since my speed tests and latency are noticebly better around 4 am..i will post various tracings throughout the day for more info....just wondering though say it was a problem with a node? if i called my isp and argued is it possible for this problem to be fixed?

was reading some more somewhere and got an idea to try pinging my default gateway...i dont think this is normal..i got

minimum = 21 ms
maximum =985 ms
average =389 ms

again not sure of the relevance of this but this could be the heart of my problem

MosDef112

Oh yeah.. There's definitely an issue with your line, it's not in your end. Pings to your gateway should not surpass 65ms at it's worst. It seems to me that the node you're on is very crowded. This is affecting you more than your ISP's network's ability to handle the traffic, since your latency is high, but rather consistent in your traces. I would talk to your ISP, and try to convince them to split your node.
