hello i have a cable modem and my conn used to be good but now it sucks ass. i would like to try to tweak my system for "optimal" performance. Could one of u guys give me sum advice or somthing. Pls dont tell me to do anthing that might screw up my system, i just want a safe tweak or somthing. i took the tcp ip test and here are my results, i would greatly appreciate it if u could help me out. thx.

TCP options string = 020405b401030301

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 65700
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 32850
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2628 kbps (328.5 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1051.2 kbps (131.4 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = OFF

Time to live left = 45 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = OFF

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

What's your OS?

here are the real results, the one up there is wrong, im basically looking to increase my download speed with a tweak, my OS is Windows 98.

SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer
TCP properties for IP = 66.26.237.153 ()
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows 98)

TCP options string = 020405b401010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 5840
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 5840
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 233.6 kbps (29.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 93.44 kbps (11.68 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 112 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Increase your RWIN to 64240. Here's the key to change in Windows 98:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CURRENTCONTROLSET/SERVICES/VXD/MSTCP

Add a STRING called DEFAULTRCVWINDOW, make the value 64240. Reboot your machine, and test it again.

i changed the value and i tested my connection and here wat i got
tell me if its ne better or if i didnt help much.

thx for u help btw:)

You're welcome. :) Those settings seem right, now just run a speed test to see if you're happy with the speeds you could now get. Try visiting this speed test site: dslreports.com/stest/?loc=3 (http://www.dslreports.com/stest/?loc=3). Let me know how you make out.

Please Post this in the Tweaking forum. Try the tweaks below, Don't do Crazyman unless you are experienced with CPUs. Speed and Ram amount needed. Install the patches provided by Speedguide. Reply after you have done all that. Have a good day.:)

Test running..........
** Speed 2053(down)/358(up) kbps **
(At least 41 times faster than a 56k modem)
Finish.
:eek:

I am going to assume that it's after the patches. If it is, then you will be surprized by how fast you can go after you apply ALL the tweaks.:)

Does the webpage tweak actually work or is significant from ur experience and others peeps experience

It does work. However, the improvements depends on your computer's systems.:)

:) if i raise my rwin # more do u think it would help my system more? also i have never defraged my system ever since i bought it(bout 2 years now), u think defraging will help?:D

LOL.. You're a funny man! Yes, defraging will absolutely help, especially after not doing so for two years. I bet your hard drive sounds like popcorn by now from all the data fetching it has to do LOL.

Increasing your RWIN may help, but it could also introduce re-transmission errors, which in return it could create packet loss. It all depends on how stable your Internet line is. I would try it, it never hurt to trial it out.
