Does anybody know how to work around older graphics cards with XP? I have a Diamond Multimedia Viper V770 Ultra TNT2. The system recognizes the card is there, but the drivers for it aren't loading, and it seems to be using semi-generic SVGA drivers. I tried installing the last set of drivers made for my specific card, but XP wouldn't allow me. I tried installing Detonator 4 drivers, and those seem to have gone through, but the TNT2 drivers still aren't 'active', if that's the correct word. HELP suggests that I uninstall the card, then try to reinstall it. ??? Any other suggestions?

It also seems to have a problem with my HP-9710i cd burner. It won't load DIRECTCD.EXE (if I remember correctly). Anybody else having problems like these, and how did you work around them?

While you wait for an expert's opinion - I don't think Direct CD works with XP (yet).

As for the TNT2 card:
What do you mean XP won't let you? Do you mean it says not to? Is there a "Continue to Load Anyway" button? If so, click on it.

I think I recently read somewhere about that directcd.exe thing not working, which doesn't make sense. I haven't tried burning a CD since I installed XP, but will have to give it a shot tonight.

As for the TNT2 issue, when I look at it through HARDWARE MANAGER, it has a yellow exclamation point, and shows a [Code 10] error. When I look at driver properties, it doesn't show anything for the individual things. Does anybody else have an older graphics card like this and having the same problem?

And on ANOTHER note.. my system has 2 hd's. The first one was naturally converted to NTFS from FAT32. How can I do that to the second drive, and will it destroy the stuff I have on it while it's being converted?

You can use partition magic to convert the fat table without loosing any data. For TNT2 card I would read some support or contact support for compatability with windows XP, the card is defenatly not that old it is still pretty good. As for direct cd I don't like it and don't use it, and I would suggest you switch to Nero, because the latest Easy cd creator sux big time.

Would that be Microsoft's site that I would read up on compatability for my TNT2? www.diamondmm.com no longer updates drivers for this old card. Could I use reference drivers from Nvidia itself, I wonder? Hmm.. and thanks for the suggestion on the burner. I wasn't sure if I HAD to have Direct CD installed as part of the drivers for the burner. I've only had it 2-3 weeks. I'll snag the latest Nero and see how that goes. Thanks for all the help/suggestions.

Nope- you don't need DirectCD - I don't have it. Course I also use Nero too.

One of my machines has a TNT 2 32 mb type card and can use the built in XP drivers but uses the latest NVida drives
and I have one that uses an old TNT 8 mb Riva card. Both able to use the two sets of drivers.
Not sure what drivers you can use - you can get the lastest NVIdia drivers here :
http://www.the-cad.com/files.php?directory=Videocards/nVidia/ but when you try to install them, you will have to click on the Install Anyway button. I believe that XP creates a Restore Point so you don't have much to lose.

good luck

I just un-installed DirectCD, so I shouldn't get that error anymore when I login. I'll see if these new drivers will work out for me. I've been itching to re-install Quake III. :) Thanks for your suggestions.

Well.. I installed Nero 5.5.3.5 (I think), and it works ok, but I think it might be causing an occasional problem with my Zone Alarm. Dunno. Sometimes Zone Alarm will load up fine, others it just craps out and won't start. Wierd. And I installed the latest XP drivers from Nvidia, Detonator 4, and I thought it was going to
work. When I rebooted, same thing, generic drivers. I'm tempted to write Nvidia an email asking for help. Blah!
