I have an older version of MS Powerpoint (4.0). Everything I can find on .pps ext. says it is a Powerpoint Slide Presentation file, however, whenever I receive an e-mail attach. with this ext. and try to download it, Powerpoint give me the error box with the red X saying, "Sorry, this is not a powerpoint extension."
I have opened a folder, clicked on view/folder options/file types, and in the Registered File Types box, I found the PPS file extension listed. When I highlight 'PPS file', the file type details directly beneath shows this; Extension: PPS, Content Type (MIME): (this area is blank), Opens with: POWERPNT. So....my question is, 'Why won't Powerpoint open these files?' What do need to do to get my machine to open these .pps attachments?
I don't use my system for any office apps., mostly gaming and surfing, and don't know much about Word, Excel, Pwrpt.,etc. I just want it to open these attachments when they come up on an e-mail. Any help appreciated.

This might work as it is quite new.

This site has a Power Point viewer -The Microsoft PowerPoint 97/2000/2002 Viewer enables you to share PowerPoint 97, PowerPoint 2000, or PowerPoint 2002 presentations with users who do not have PowerPoint installed on their systems

richard...
maybe i should have been a little more thorough in my explanation. i have pwrpnt and it opens .ppt extensions, it just won't open .pps extensions, both are supposed to be pwrpnt files so why does it open one and not the other. is there a setting i need to change somewhere to get it to open both types of files?

If you have an older version, it is most likely not recognizing the new version format, even though they share the same file extension.

For instance, PP 2000 has the option of saving to prior versions, such as 97/2000; 95, and 4.0.

Time to upgrade! Or, have the sender save as older version.

Hmmm - maybe I wasn't clear enough either. I agree with twwabw - pps is what I have for Power Point from Office XP
I too was thinking that YOUR version of a Power Point viewer might be a little dated and needed upgrading. The MS site I gave probably has the latest PP viewer.
