ok i just got XP up and runnin last night..the thing is that whenever i install ANY version of windows it makes my modem and my video card have the same irq port..this makes my system freeze around every 20-30 min..and well that just suckz....i normall just go into the device manager and change it thru there but it wont let me touch change anything....under resources in the profile for my modem...the box "use atomatic settings" is checked and greyed out..i wanna uncheck it so i can mess with my irq...it will not let me...can anyone help??
You might be able to assign another IRQ for your modem in your motherboards BIOS OR your BIOS should have an option NOT to assign an IRQ to the video and that may change it as well. Look up or motherboard specs on the manufactures web site or if you have the manual it will tell you in there.
Here's a link about IRQ sharing with win2000, same as XP I would assume

Only do this if you're really having problems, but it will release that hold on your IRQ's. Unles you are having problems though I wouldnt worry about it.
Go to your device manager and open up computer. Select the acpi and go to properties. Then go to driver and update. Then display list. Then select standard PC.
Should fix your problem, although I dont consider it as much an issue in XP as in win2k.
