I am looking for a security program or something to password protect my computer when it is firts turned on. I share a house with a couple of other students and I do not want them messing around on my system. On of them seems to think that because we all live in the same house what's yours is mine also. NOT!
They are click happy for anything that can be downloaded.
Man, I am getting just stressed out thinking about it again.
So if any of you out there can point me in the right direction it would be great. My system specs are on the bottom and my OS is Windows ME.
Thanks
I haven't tried this little gem from WebAttack but it seemds to fit your requirements. It is a recent listing with them.
Go to This site (http://www.webattack.com/get/winsecofficer.shtml) and check it out. There are others in the freeware and shareware sections of WebAttack. Look under 'Privacy'.

well the software works for what it was intended. You are still able to bypass the desktop lockout by hitting the "reset" button. You can acctualy hide the icons on your desktop too but I was looking for a kind of all or nothing type of security. You know, it asks for a password on bootup before you get to the desktop and if you can't provide the correct password no access.
But thanks, I gess I will still keep looking.
the link tothese little gems (http://freeware.intrastar.net/privacy.htm)
There are a number of programs listed on the page and you may want to go to their homepage to bookmark it. ;)

Just put a boot password in your BIOS. Without it, you can't boot up the computer. Three wrong tries and it locks up, and then they have to reboot just to try more passwords.
Press the delete key to enter BIOS setup. If your computer has a splash screen when it first boots up, push the delete key when the splash screen is on. On my computer, that's the Dell logo with a picture of the Earth in the background. If you have a Dell, that's what it'll look like, but I'm sure other manufacturers do it too. Otherwise, just do it right after it shows your video adapter. You should just have to push it once, and then it should enter setup.

The BIOS is definitely where you want to set this. W9x/ME are designed specifically to be insecure - I mean easy to use :) Oh yeah - same thing.
Some BIOS setups are accessed by means other than the delete key. Use whatever you machine requests as it is booting up.

Well, there ya go. password protection and without using a d/loaded program to get what you want.
Glad I don't have the problem. 3 computers, all networked at home and no hassles after son fixed it.
