I've been reading that routers act as a hardware firewall. I'm going to be getting broadband shortly and will have 3 computers. I'm just wondering if I will be able to use programs like napster, bearshare, limewire, etc. with a router. Will I be able to download but not upload? One of the main reasons for getting broadband is because of programs like these.

Yes,you will be able to use Napster etc... with no problem. The firewall part has to do with hiding your addresses via Network Address Translation from the outside world

The NAT firewall also prevents most incoming connections.
Yes you can use all of those. You will need to go in and set up the filter rules on what you want the router to allow access. Get the router! you'll be glad you did. I have a netgear router and it works great however there documentation really SUCKS!

Get a router. They kick bum*. I don't use Napster anymore, but I have Morpheus, and it works fine. Our family computer has Napster and Bearshare, and they both work fine too. Never used Limewear. All this without even having to set up any filters or anything.
