Hey compadres,
I set up a network today with an SMC Barricade 7004BR router. They had one pc on the network connected via cable modem. It had two nics in it. The network is an NT4.0 server with ten Win98 and WinMe clients. In addition to the server and clients they use a terminal emulation software called Tiny Term Plus by Century Software. They log into the unix box (also on the network) to use this software package over the network.Hewlett Packard 24 port hub with both servers and all clients connected to it.Basically I moved the modem to the server area.plugged up the modem to the WAN port of the router, used a crossover to connect port 1 of the router down into the hub,Winipcfg=release renew and everybody is surfing fast.Problem is they all have new IP addresses and cannot connect to the UNIX box using the terminal emulation software.I disconnect my setup with router and modem,Winipcfg\release\renew and they IP addresses from the correct block and they using their software once again.Sorry about the length but I trying to give as much info as possible. Is this something that needs to be configured on the UNIx box,the router, the NT server?

Let me see if I understand the question. Since the router, they all have new IP addressed. Is this becuase the router is set up as DHCP server and the clients as DHCP clients? If this is the case, how did the clients receive their IP addresses before the addition of the router? Is DHCP enabled on the NT server?

How are your terminal sessions configured? Via IP or DNS? Maybe the DHCP server the router (if activated) changed the IP address of teh unix box of which the terminal emulator is trying to access via static ip.

Just some food for though.

1. Before the router, how did the clients receive their IP's

2. Was DHCP turned on or off on the router

3. Was DHCP turned on or off on the NT4 Server?

4 How is the IP set in the unix box

5 How are the teminal emulation sessions configured. To connect to the unix via static IP of DNS name?

Clients received ip's via the nt server(dhcp)
DHCP turned on in the router
DHCP turned off on the server after install of router
Terminal sessions are configured via IP

Do you have the option of setting the LAN on a static ip addressing scheme? Since the ips may change and you are using IP to locate the X-Server...

I agree with Cyberskye. If you could just run static IP your life would be much easier. My networks are all static IP and we have thousands of users over the country. Static IP makes everything much simpler in my mind.

How does the UNIX box get its IP?

Setting everything up static in the router did the trick. Thanks for the help guys,it is greatly appreciated.:D
