I recently signed up for AOL Plus and received an ActionTec Home USB DSL Modem. After I installed the modem I re booted and now my CPU crashes whenever I try to load up with the modem connected to the USB port. (The CPU loads up fine with the modem not connected) . I tried to plug in the modem after the CPU loads and can sign on to AOL using the DSL but it crashes once the modem is detected. (the light for the modem goes from red---not detected--- to green---detected---)

I have called tech support but they, of course, were no help.

I am running Win2k, I am not sure if I am in the right place, but I am running out of options. Any help on this matter is appreciated.

i have only worked with the action tec dsl modem once, with windows 98. i will tell you that it was an excellent sales tool for cable modems, but that is besides the point...

I would recommend going into your device mgr and uninstalling your usb host controller and usb root hub. then reboot and windows 2k should automatically redetect and reinstall each of those. then attempt to reconnect the modem again. if you still experience crashes after that, i would conclude that the software for the modem for win 2k is junk. at that point, you coud try to obtain newer drivers from the manufacuturer. or, you could box up the dsl modem and call your cable company. good luck.

If you havent yet installed win2k service pack 2, that might be your problem. SP2 contains some USB updates which might be the missing link to why it's not working properly.

If that modem has nic support, you might consider buying a nic and connecting that way. You'll have better speeds and more stablity.

my brother has aol plus and he's very happy with it versus phone
