well, i had the joy today of working on a system that was (i later found out) heavily infected (189 files) with w32.funlove.4099. normally an "oh well, time to wipe the drive" sort of scenario, but i made the mistake of shuffling some files to another computer (my main system) and getting it infected as well (this was before i knew of it. this was just supposed to be a hardwrae upgrade & clean install jobbie). i know its embarrassing to say, but run my main system naked. the server can scan other systems on the LAN (which i do ~ once every 2 weeks to a month), but at this point, i will just take each machine and wipe it clean.
sheer joy, i say. lucky for me, i used the setup spot for my server to work on this system (so my server was disconnected and should still be clean). and even luckier, not more than 2 days ago, i backed up all my data files from the main system (just under 20GB) onto CD and a spare IDE drive in the server, and disabled the IDE controller for future backup needs (*whew, that was close*).
anyways, looks like i have my %$@*$# work cut out for me. wish me luck.
Good Luck!
People say scanning all system files at the beginning of each new start up day is overkill, but I say it's just good computer maintenance. You never know anymore! Everyday, some thing new or old can be found, so overkill or not, I scan everyday.:)

I've dealt with that damn virus on two seperate occasions this year. It almost made me quit my job.
Good luck :)
Not only do I scan the entire hard drive every day but I also now check for updates to NAV and other software venders for security patches. Takes me about an hour out of my work day but better safe the sorry...

thanks for the support folks. i have managed to repair my main system with the exception of OE, but thats no big deal. by the time i noticed the infection, i only had 8 infected files, so there was not too much loss.
the carrier system, on the other hand, is another story. the guy said there is a folder of "irreplacable stuff" on his hdd, and i am dreading the whole aspect of having to move it onto another system on the LAN so i can scrub the drive. funlove infects .exe and a couple other filetypes on shared drives as well. guess i have to do what i have to do..... scan-a-thon 2001.
(*sighs*)

What really ticks me off is the people that cause this crap, really gain nothing from it. They cause unknown people problems.
Kinda like the dipsticks that keys cars, or randomly flattens tires...WTF??? why???
i fully agree. i remember talking with another gentleman here at SG a long time ago about this, and i think it boils down to 2 character-types....... bubblegummers who dont understand the concept of reciprocity....... and older people who are still stuck in bubblegummer-phase who dont understand the concept of reciprocity. or karma for that matter. not to say all younger people are lacking in this dept.... just the ones who do this sort of thing.
if i were a religious man, i could probably take comfort in the thought that they would inevitable pay for their actions, but i am not. the thought of Karma does give some solace, but i have seen too many people go unrepentant for their victim-strewn lives to gain full contentment.
(*shrugs*) i just do my part in trying to help, and hope thats enough in the end (*end of what, exactly, i have not yet determined*).
and by the way, Ken, things are going pretty well a far as what else you mentioned. there was no actual surgery, just lots of pain and cruddy meds/shots and a few days in the hospital. nothing a super-macho stud like myself cant handle :p . thanks for the concern, man.
