View Full Version : Win 98se wont release IP address
For some reason my Win98se PC picked up some weird IP address that is well out side of my UGate routers range. I can not manualy enter a static nor get the PC to release it. I have tried 3 different NICs, removing all network configurations and re-adding them but still this IP address comes back :( I also tried removing and installing while disconencted from the router but same issue
maybe format is in order....unless it is outside your home where the problem lies.
Does the IP start with 169.......
If so, your ISP is probably down right now.
No it does not begin 169 but it should be 192.168.x.x. I am DHCP with my UGate. Also Subnet is wrong at 255.255.0.0 when it should be 255.255.255.0 My DSL line is up 24/7 as I run a rather large web server and if it were down I would not hear the constat hard drive chatter ;)

I asked if it starts with 169..... not 192.....
Doesn't matter
Have you tried using the Internet Connection Wizard?
Always works for me.

I did say it did not start with 169 and added what it should be reading for addition information. Anyways will go reload from CD as when I tried this it fails saying something about can not load help files. Thanx for the quick replies!

I say norm is right, your isp is probably down.
un-power everything,
then power up
1)modem
2)router
3)pc
if it still does it then your isp is down.
on reboot win98 will automatically release and renew,
unless the modem can't find an IP.
even still the pc should still see the router.192.168.1.1

I caught you :D
np, I just wanted to be sure on the 169, cause that's what I get when my ISP is down.
Crazyman, ISP is not down. My webserver is up and very active plus my pager has not gone off as my network will page me if:
1. My web server goes down
2. Power failure on UPS

It might have been worth letting us know what the IP address that it gets is....Norm is on the right track by asking if it begins with 169.....because starting with Windows 98....if the OS has TCP bound to the NIC...set to obtain...it will automatically look for a DHCP server....then if it doesnt find one...look for other 98 machines....and assign itself a 169 address. Telling us if it was a 169 would help us answer your question, or if it were a 10.x.x.x we'd look elsewhere.
This is the only system on the network doing this? Check for a sub 7 virus lately? Just a thought. What is the address?
Lot's more info required!

Have you tried reinstalling your NIC, not just the protocols?
