Would anyone like to buy my cable connection along with my cable provider?
Bids start at $1.00, and then that’s asking too much.
Well, I’m done with the tweaking bit; nothing seems to help increase my speed.
I don’t even come close to what they’re supposedly offering, in fact, if I get half the speeds
that they offer, I’m lucky.
I’m tired of arguing with them, it leads nowhere.
Either something’s drastically wrong with my cable line or with my provider.
Whatever the reason I’ve had it. As far as I’m concerned they can stick their cable package where the sun doesn’t shine.
I just wanted to thank everyone who in the past had offered to help me out.
Your suggestions were appreciated.
This is a great forum where people can learn from others.
Keep up the good work.

John!

I know how frustrated you are and you know we've tried everything under the sun to get you some kind of speed.
Sorry that is ending this way, but DON'T be a stranger! :(

Maybe two for the price of one! Been complaining to charterpa for some time now. Line speed is down from 10 times faster than a 56K modem to about 3 times as fast. Pages won't load, many stalls, downloads take for ever (3.70MB file took 17.5 minutes). Now they say "We don't guarantee speed just a connection".
Although I haven't posted here in a very long time, I've applied all the tweaks and their variations that others have posted with the best change in line speed going from an average of 185kbps to 205kbps. Nothing like what I had when I first got cable a year ago.

We can give it another try if you like too:) :)

Lobo, you've taken a whack at, I've taken a whack at it, It's not John or his computer, his ISP is jerking him around something awful. He even paid for a higher speed package and didn't get squat out of it. I think it's high time he filed a complaint with the Atty Generals office about the situation. :(

Hi Blebs and Lobo, how's it going guys?
You’re right, I did upgrade my package from a 500/250 deal, to 1500/500. It also costs me an extra $20 a month now.
I have to say that my upload speeds have doubled; around
400 to 500kbps consistently, but there isn't much change in my download speed at all; anywhere from 325kbps, to a max of around 850kbps. And that's "bits" and not "bytes". With 1500 down, I should see much better then what I’m getting. Everytime I call the head honcho and talk with him he gives me a run around. He tells me to click on start, then run, type command and then tells me to do some other garbage, then say's that I'm showing downloads of 1560 kbps which are equal to 195 kilobytes. And I say, "where". Then he puts the blame on the sites that I go to. But it's like that with every site that I visit.
I think there's something wrong with my modem, but according to him, "it's working fine". The activity lights are blinking like crazy,
even when my system is turned off.
Below is a speed test that I had taken at the site which Lobo has suggested in other posts. I don't see anything close to the speeds that my provide has stated.

Test running..Downloaded 60990 bytes in 910ms
Downloaded 696000bytes in 13250ms
First guess is 375kbps
slow speed line – now testing 1mb
Downloaded 1109250 in 25370ms
Upload test not enabled

**Speed 349(down)/na**
(At least 6 times faster then a 56k modem)
Finish

Man, I’m cooking friends. With speeds like this how could you ask for more? *LOL*

Is this a Cable connection or DSL connection, there is big difference:)

I have a cable connection, Lobo and the package I currently have is: 1500/500. But I don't even come close to my download cap.
I average around 1/3 to 1/2 and have never ever come close to 1500kbps. I use windows 98 with I.E. 5.01. My P.C. has 750 Mhz with 256 SDRAM. I know it isn't my computer, when I'm working in Window's my P.C. is extremely fast; files and folders open in a snap. But on the net, it's a different story.
What I'd like to do is take my cable modem up to my provider and break it over his head. It may not help to increase my speeds,
but God would it relief the stress. *LOL*
Here's my TCP/IP results:

SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer
TCP properties for IP = xx.xxx.xx.xx()
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.
Browser/OS = Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.01; Windows 98)

TCP options string = 020405b40103030101010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 128480
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 5139.2 kbps (642.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2055.68 kbps (256.96 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 37 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Sting,
I'm in Austintown, and yes, ZOOM is slower than my great grandma, and she is dead. I've tried tweaking, (Lobo and Cablenut are great) seams I can get 75 KB(or what ever- from Netstat live program) at best, while recently I'm lucky to get half that. DSL may be available where you are, I'm going to look into it.
I envy seeing all the great speeds everyone gets. I'm resigned to taking 12 to 20 hours for an ISO D/L (which used to take me 4-5 days with dial up, but still doesn't cut it ).

Any other ZOOM haters been lurking around....if you get good speed, please reply.

Is there any hope WinXP will give a boost?

Later,
Medmike

p.s. I think I'll e-mail a few of these forum messages to ZOOM

medmike, First please start on thread and if this is a dialup connection, well nothing I can say but you do not have to hold on
:) :)

Sting, whose speedpatch do you have installed, SG's does not put that RWIN in
:)

Lobo, I’m using Cablenut’s 4.02 version. I changed the TTL recommendation from 48 to 64.
The RWIN (128480) had been put in when I installed it.
I also see that I’m not the only one with, “Zoom” who’s getting lousy speeds.
MedMike, you’re right around the corner from me. I live about 10 miles from Austintown. When I was younger, Austintown had been my main hangout.
I don’t know what the problem is, but it seems that we just can’t get the speeds as others do. I’ve called Zoom
more times then there’s days in a month; I’ve tried to explain our situation and so on, and it gets you nowhere.
They always have some type of excuse: “it’s the sites you’re connecting to”, "internet traffic is what’s slowing you down”, and on and on and on. I’m done with trying to reason with them. You know, they had said that I’m basically the only person whose been complaining. I’d like to know, is there anyone else in this forum outside of Mike and myself who use “Zoom”? If so, are you satisfied with the speeds that you’re getting? And if you are, what are your speeds?

For Win 9x bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside icon on desktop in box that says Cablenut, click on adjuster, in box that says DefaultRvcWindow take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try:513920, 622680 or 524176, 531440

Leave GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize blank
You do not have to show me but check analyzer here at SG to make sure RWIN is in, you will see number right after (RWIN) on analyzer
At bottom click save to registry, and REBOOT each time you change value in adjuster or it will not work.Click on tools at top of IE, internet options, delete files and offline files (This is safe, temp files) and click on clear history after EVERY test Fast speed test here (http://speedtest.umnet.umich.edu/)
Speedtest may open another browser, so check taskbar and close other one, no other programs should be running, No AIM, ICQ, Virus scanner, Firewall, nothing:)
