I am running win 2000 pro and am sharing my internet cable connnection via a staright through cable. My problem however is I can't get any type of file sharing going from the second computer to the host (win 2000). I can access the the other computers shares but it can't access mine. Anyone have some ideas. I have the file and printer sharing service enabled on both NIC's. Please help

Well, you can try enabling the guest account on the win2k box, but I don't know if that will work. If not, whatever the user name on the other computer is, add a user to the win2k comp with the same name. I don't know if you need to use the same password, or even one at all. But I do that here at home.

Two different OSes and file systems? Did you set up your Win2K box with NTFS? Is the other box a Win98 with Fat32 file system? If that is the case that may be the problem. I not sure if you can take your Win2K box back to FAT32 as I am studying for the A+ and still learning. Any suggestions out there?

Actually yeah the 2k box is NTFS. I hope it will still be possible. If I find anything I'll let you know. Thanks for the input.

Thanks. I never even thought about trying that. I'll let you know how it goes. i think that is somwhere along the right lines because when I try to access the 2k box from the 98 box it prompts me for a password. Every password I put in it tells me is incorrect. The 98 box appears to be trying to connect as IPC$ for some reason. Thanks. I'll keep you posted on the ongoing battle

NTFS doesn't make a difference. I have my win2k pro comp set up with NTFS, and the others both have 98 on them, and can access my files. Seriously, use a different user name on the two computers, and on add the non-win2k user name to the win2k computer. You might be able to leave the password blank, if not, use the same password as you use for that name on the other computer. I think it's basically like the user on the other computer is logging onto the win2k one, just instead of sitting at the win2k one, you're sitting at the other one. It worked for me at least.

That worked perfectly. I chnaged the userdid on the second computer and added the UserID to the Win 2kProf machine and it worked perfectly. Thanks.

No prob, glad I could help you out.

As for NTFS, that would only be a problem if you physically put the NTFS hard drive in a machine running Win9x, or if you install Win9x onto the machine with that hard drive. When the info goes across the network, the file system doesn't matter.
