in the process of doing a clean install on my box, after using fdisk to repartition & format, w98 loaded up good to the point of rebooting after installing basic drivers on w98 os disk. during the reboot there was a message asking if i wanted to boot with harddrive or w98cd (first time i've seen this message). after selecting boot with hd i received a win protection error indicating missing files/dlls. i reformatted and tried again...same results. is this indicating a bad mobo, win98os disk, or just an inept person behind the whole action? any comments welcome. thanks. rookie:confused:

Welcome to speedguide. Let me point you to a help page and maybe it will help explain it a bit better.

Windows protection errors have always pointed to bad ram for me.
Try from scratch again, and if you have the same problems, switch the ram with known good stick(s).

Here's a reference artiicle (http://www.speedcorp.net/guides/windows/instwin98.php) for installing Win98

Either bad ram, CPU overheating, or the ram is/was seated with a bad connection. Protection errors seem to be due to corruption of files in transit through the ram or CPU.

That's just from experiences I've had, don't quote me :)
It sounds strange, but that's how I see it.

hummm. reseated & cleaned everything and repeated the clean install. got the same problem & exact messages (reboot from hd/or cd and win protection error). tried another win98 cd to do the clean install and all works just peachy!. my only thought at this time is that the w98 cd is damaged and does not load up properly. it does look like it has several scratches. any other thoughts on this situation?? thanks for any insight...rookie:confused:

Damaged cd is possible. Do you have access to another computer that needs formatted? Use the scratched disc and see if the other computer does the same thing. Just a thought.

But there are solutions available to take scratches out of CD's.

thanks norm & blebs...i have another pc with win2k but i don't want to reformat it now... when installing with the suspect cd, i do get messages that certain files cannot be found or were not laoded properly (don't know if this is indicative of a bad cd or bad mobo perhaps?....hey blebs...where can i learn about removing the scratches from cd?? thanks, rookie

Just about any store that sells computers or parts will have CD scratch remover Rookie.

It actually smooths the surface of the scratches to allow the laser to read through the otherwise rough edges around the scratch.
