I'll be getting broadband cable internet through AT&T in a week or so and am looking into purchasing a router/switch to share the connection amongst 3 or 4 computers. In the past I used wingate and a 10/100 ethernet hub but I'd like a standalone unit this time. The three models I was looking at were the Asante friendlynet 3400c, the Linksys sr41, and the netgear 314. I almost bought the linksys model but I've heard various complaints about it and the netgear model as well. The asante model seems to have what i need but i can't find any reviews or opinions on it. Any comments would be helpfull.

There are more posts out there about this topic than you can shake a stick at. however, I own the Netgear RT314, and I have never had any problems with it. All my games run, I can host my FTP server, and the only time I have to reboot it is when I upgrade the firmware. Rock Solid.

I read through the posts I could find on the subject and there were quite a few. The concensus was about even between the linksys and the netgear. It was mainly the Asante I was interested in as i can't find anything about it except on thier website (never trust company promo). My biggest concern is that I'll be moving out of my apartment in a year and I need something even my roomates can operate.
I had my desicion narrowed down to the Linksys or the Netgear. After reading as many posts that I could stand I chose the Netgear. I have been up and running with the Netgear for about a month now and I couldn't be more happy with it.
Its a breeze to set up as long as you have all your info from your ISP (ie: dns, ip address, default gateway..etc).
As far as hooking up other pcs thats way easy too. I brought home my brothers laptop and hooked it into the router and booted it up. Bam, I was surfing right away since it was already set up to get an ip address automatically.
I have not had to reboot my router to date either..
All in all I feel very good about my purchase of the Netgear 314. I think with shipping I got mine for $106.00 off of a website that I found through www.pricewatch.com.
Regards,
Hieysk
Sorry I can only speak for the Netgear and it is a winner. Fast and reliable.
