I'm in the Columbus Ohio area, and shortly before the big Code Red issue hit, my cable modem took a dive. By "dive" I mean it started randomly disconnecting and going down for 20-30 minutes at a time. I do a lot of gaming on line, mostly Tribes 2. Servers I usually ping 25-30 at I now can not get a ping below 350. I am using Insight, however, most of my friends are on Time Warner and experienceing the same issues. My question is, is anybody having the same issues, or know whats going on? I called and wrote their tech support and they pretty much blew me off. :(

There is a problem with an overloaded circuit. Several people have reported problems, and they seem to mostly occur in the evenings as you might guess.

KIP!!! I think I spoke w/ you on the phone once! I'm Darian from Microcenter tech support. :) So are they working on the isue I take it? They told me it is only happening at "peak hours" but Im online from 11 PM till 3-4 AM. Not peak for my area. :)

Try running a traceroute when the pings are high. I believe you will see that the delay is between 24.95.81.129 and 24.95.81.230, which I think is the circuit from TW to the RR center in Westerville.

Let me know what you get.

At the risk of sounding stupid (I am, btw ;) ) How does one do this?

In win9x, go to the dos prompt, or in win2k, go to command. Then type tracert [server], where [server] is a url or ip address.

Examples:
C:\>tracert yahoo.com
or
C:\>tracert 216.115.108.245

What is the docsis modem? Do they know about the problem? And are they working on resolving it?

All I've heard is that they are having problems with the routers and that they are working on a resolution, however, I've heard this now for almost 2 months. My DNS, DHCP, POP3, SMTP, etc, are all coming out of Columbus or Westerville, not sure which, but I believe Westerville is correct.

I wish I had an answer for you, but at this time, all I have is hearsay and the evidence that I've posted in the form of HyperTrace Packet loss.

The DOCSIS modem I have is a Toshiba PCX1100 and they just introduced those into our area about a year ago, if I'm not mistaken. They have also started a business tier system with different speed packages for business class clients. I think this is affecting the lower bandwidth that I see now.

Like I said, they blew me off. Its really starting to upset me, because, like you said, Ive been dealing with this for about 2 months as well. I'm very close to calling and telling them "No thank you!" to their service and trying to find decent DSL in our area. (East side of Columbus)

I know the feeling, believe me! I've been in touch with or should I say was in touch with, our area administrative lead tech for the Cable Company TWC, and I've never gotten a straight answer nor has he returned any calls or emails for almost a month now.

For me, DSL isn't an option. Too far away from the CO. It's either Road Runner or Dial-up and even with the crappy speeds I'm seeing right now, I prefer to stay with RR. I think you can see why.

I don't know whats going on in the office. Generally, when you see things like this, there are big changes coming. Whatever they are doing, they are treating it like "Top Secret Classified Information". ;)

Yeah, I know. My buddy uses DSL and his company just went bankrupt. Now there trying to pass him off to Ameritech. Worse service, same money. :( I do know I had less packet loss on my dial up, at least as far as games are concerned.. lol. :)

Well hopefully, whatever they are up to, will be resolved soon and we can get on with our surfing and gaming. As long as I keep seeing problems like that packet loss, I know they aren't done doing whatever it is that they are doing. When I no longer see this, and I still have problems, then perhaps, it's time to go back to dial-up, though I sure don't like the thoughts of it.:)

Hello - I'm new to this site - I am in the NW Cols. area, near Dublin. June 16th was the fisrt time I really noticed the dramatic fall-off in performance. The email server(s) have been "failing" frequently, up to 10 times in one day, and the speed rates have really bottemed out, especially during peak times. I don't claim to be a super advanced user, but am intersted in learing "what is going on" in this area, and contributing if I'm "qualified". Thanks.

Welcome aboard JC714!

June 16th or 17th is exactly correct right! That is when we had the outage up here and since then, well, you know the story!

Again, Welcome to Speedguide. ;)

Hey Guys I have been dealing with TW for about 2 years now and The slow down has been going on for about that long. Thier recent excuse is the red worm. What I have noticed is since the red worm my Black Ice icon flashes all day.

One excuse I had from them was the amount of users on line was the reason why my speeds were so slow. Where I live there is only 3 people in a 2 mile radius with TW RR. At times my FTP downloads have been GREAT! but most of the time the dls are 16 to 140kps. I am checking tweaks now to see it that helps. I'll Keep everyone posted.

Tweaking is not going to help. They are having router problems and I've heard of at least one over loaded circuit. I hate to say this group, but it's just something that we'll have to wait out.

This is what I meant when I said that they are treating this like a "Top Secret", they are telling all of us different things. They've gone so far as to send a line tech to my house and stall for time to resolve the issue. I was told by the administrative office that I'm borderline on acceptable speeds. At times, I'm downloading at 185KB, before June 16th, I was running 311 to 300!

Yeah your right, I downloaded cablenut and and went to the CNet site to dl. It was awful!! But like I said with some sites Like MegaGames I am downloading right now Red Faction at 1390 with WSFTP pro. I've been with TW for a while so I'll stick it out. I refuse to go back to AOL. LOL

Hi again - I see this done all the time in these forums, and I don't really want to add to the repetitiveness of the group, BUT, as I'm still new to the Cable Modem scene - if I post my test results, will someone take a look at make any applicable suggestions for improving speed and/or efficiency?

Hop number 3 looks suspiciously slow!! I talked to a RR tech last last night, (concidence) and he tells me there are huge router problems in Westerville, they were loosing power pretty consistantly - and the put the router on a generator, which needed constant baby-sitting. FYI to all.

If your refering to port 80 hits, yes. You'll be seeing those for some time to come. Code Red Worm is looking for other servers to infect, and since alot of people ignored all the warnings, this is the result. ;)

Hi y'all, I'm new to this group, but I have been out to a different Roadrunner-Columbus, OH group. FYI it's at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,653490;root=cable,rr;mode=flat. There are some good folks out there (especially for a newbie like me).

I've had RR (and a new pc) since early 5/2001, and have had outages every night (I'm in the northland area). I mean full outages, no surfing for minutes (or more), repeatedly. Tons of packet loss, at the first hop. I'm having a heck of a time getting RR to fix this - 2 modems, 2 NIC cards, 6 tech calls, 1 maintenance call, and pc diagnostics later, I'm not in any better shape (although I have learned more than I wanted to about cable modem service). I'm served by Insight, and RR is new in my area, so I think that's the problem. I'm getting the distinct impression that either RR works great or it isn't worth the trouble. Should I switch to DSL? I don't know, tough choice.

If you have any suggestions for what I can try or for what I can ask RR to try, I would love to hear them! As a final note, I hope this isn't a duplicate post, I lost my connection as I was submitting a few minutes ago (grrrrrr).

Well, first off my friend, the new nic cards, etc, was a waste of your time and a delaying tactic on their end because they can't/won't fix the problem. It isn't just insight (Who I have.. you must be on the east side?) because most of my freinds have Time Warner, and are experiencing the same issues. If they had any morals at all I would be reimbursed for this month or so of lousy service. I'm past the point of being reasonable and am just downright angry.

Hi justcrash-I've had this same problem since initial install on 5/2, even before the June troubles, so I don't know if my problem is the same as everyone else's. They've been good about giving me credits, although I have to ask the level 3 techs to do this. I'm around Cooke/Maize Rd. Are you experiencing slow browsing or ongoing outages? I'm dealing with full outages and no modem lights blinking or anything odd to indicate that there's a problem.

Do you know anyone around our area who has DSL? If so, what's their connection like, and what company are they with?

Im over on Refugee/NoeBixby. Anyway, My mail crashes my connection every fifth time. Sometimes loading pages causes my modem to reboot. And since Im an advid gamer, I get HUGE packet Loss and ping in the 4-500's on servers I usually get 40-70 on. This is between the hours of 6 and 1 AM.. and really.. why would anyone want to be online then anyway?
Of course, during the day, ALL DAY, my activity light goes nuts.

As far as DSL, I have a few friends on it. Their ISP just went out of buisness, so theyre giving their account to Ameritech. In their minds... worse service, for same or more money, isnt an option and are seeking a new ISP.

I would have replied to your post last night, but my connection was just pure hell. I would post the pingguide results (which tracks connection loss to my gateway), but the file is sooo....long. Regarding DSL, Ameritech is being sold. I saw this on a public hearing on our local govt channel (channel 3 on insight digital). The new company is called WAVE**** (****=something, I don't recall). I believe this is happening within the next couple of months. I called ameritech about dsl recently and was dismayed by the rep's lack of knowledge and the apparent lack of support, plus I've heard some negatives about them. The site dslreports.com seems to have good info about dsl (they like speakeasy.net).

I have a newbie question - my gateway (the first hop on a ping) is 10.24.216.1. Do I have the same gateway as everyone else on RR, or is this specific to my area? Thanks

Kip Patterson
08-31-01, 08:33 AM
Your gateway is specific to your area, but I have no idea how big "your area" would be on Insight. I'm only about a mile from you but am on Time Warner.

You probably know already that 10.x.x.x addresses are Private, and as a result are repeatedly used on the 'net. The fact that someone else has the same gateway address does not mean that he is on the same gateway.

Kip - thanks for explaining things to me. I guess I don't understand the gateway/IP address set up, I had thought that only my IP address was private. Can you point me to a resource that I can read about this? Thanks again!

ckellogg1
09-02-01, 10:18 AM
Ah....random disconnects....welcome to my world of RR. I've been using PingGuide to track disconnects (to my initial gateway), and during evenings especially I go offline constantly. More so than I'd thought.

I wanted to let all of you know that I have stunned myself by ordering directvdsl. I'm very dubious about how this will work out (I have seen their poor comments and ratings at dslreports.com), but I have such an awful time with RR that I'm hoping I'll get lucky with directvdsl. The contract is month to month and I can cancel at any time, so I figure I've got little to lose. In the meantime, if by some miracle RR can fix my connection, I can cancel before installation with no charges incurred.

Thanks to all of you for your help, I will let you know how things go. Good luck surfing!
