It seems that @home will be going under pretty soon, What does this mean for all the local cable companies that use @home, Before I had Midcontinent Cable Internet, and then they switched us over to @home, I know all my data goes through the @home network with trace routes and all. So will all these subsidary's [might be the wrong word] of @home have to fend for them selves or what?

Think of @home like Time Warner, they own everything even though these little companies brand their own service from @home. Unless a conglomerate of these subsidiaries comes up with a deal to save some, if not all the network, most of you cable modem surfers will suffer the same fate that ex-NorthPoint users like me did, imminent death.

Completely backwards, most of the cable companies are partial owners of @home not the other way around. There were cable modems before @home and there will most certainly be modems after their demise. Unless you have an extremely small cable provider that cannot afford to buy the equipment and lease a backbone to transport data across you will not have to worry about your service going done. The major cable companies will have a backbone service to replace @home along with a plan to switch over customers in place if they aren't already testing them in smaller systems. And the cable providers fended for themselves when they made a deal with @home to lease their backbone service. They built the plants that provide analog, digital, and internet service to you; were in contact with @home and agreed to pay @home a price for them to provide the backbone and the equipment for (internet service) to connect the cable providers equipment to their backbone. The cable providers have engineers who design the plans and build these cable systems not @home.

Interesting.. I always thought it was the other way around. I guess I was misinformed.

Yes, @Home is not much more than a figure of speech, and their demise may be just what I've been hoping for.
Perhaps a new ISP would improve my cable provider's internet service (AT&T) and justify it's cost but definately a very large sum of money would first have to change hands

Here's a picture for you...

@Home is owned in part by AT&T. AT&T is being sought after by Comcast. I would not be suprised to see in a couple of years the @Home name being owned by Comcast, thru it's aquisition of AT&T.

Two years ago, @Home stock peaked at $99/share. On Friday, it was trading at $.38/share...right now, @Home is a liability for AT&T, as well as several other bad moves that AT&T has made over the last couple of years.

Should be interesting to see how this whole thing works out in the business world..
