interesting thing happen on the way to the internet friday night, my hard drive "40gb maxtor", took a fat dump, never could get it to reboot into regular windows, went out saturday and bought a new hard drive, funny thing was i saw alot of maxtors at below 30 gigs and above 60 gigs, but no more 40's, not to sound like im whining, lol, and of course and as always no tech support available anywhere, anyway, make a long story short, put the new drive in, no problem, but, i kept getting kicked off line randomly, just black screen, boom, did a norton hardware test, new drive was okay, but, one of my 256 ram chips was registering as bad, so i put an old 64 chip in, it registered as bad also, hmm im thinking that the slot is bad, i moved a known good chip into that slot and it registers as good, so thats 320 mgs worth of garbage. oh as soon as i eliminated the bad ram no more black screen problems.
so my final point and question is this, has anyone else with dsl lost their hard drive and or ram. seems a little odd that all these problems happen 3 weeks after i install DSL.

just some paranoid thinking on my part.

Maybe not so paranoid. Anything that connects you to the outside world other than fiber can bring with it lightning. A lot of stuff gets hit, and it could have happened to you. Doesn't take much, and it can be awfully selective about what it damages.

I'd make sure that the outlet feedig the DSL modem is grounded, and that the ground protection where the phone line enters is intact.

The phone company should be responsive to issues like this. They get touchy about the liability.

yep i was thinking the same thing, bought all new gear for the electrical lines, didnt see anything for the phone line, but it runs thru the dsl modem, which appears to be fine. hmmmmmmmm, don
