View Full Version : Counter Strike? Voodoo 3? BAD FPS!!?!
i been playing counter strike for some time now, i have a 500 mhz AMD k6-2 CPU with 160 megs of ram. i play counter strike on 800x600 res. open gl (3dfx driver) and im only getting like 20 fps , but when im playing, when i shoot, open area, or alot of people, my fps drop to like 5. i dont really know what the prob. is.
a friend of mine who has the same video card, exept its AGP, and he gets an average of 70 fps on dust, and i get like an average of 20-(when im just standing still). (my friend he has 733 mhz, and 448 ram)
if anybody knows whats wrong, or what i can do , please do tell

Does your friend also have an AMD k6-2? Cus that Processor isnt exactly the best for gaming.

yeah its most likely the agp and pci difference, because agp is a dedicated slot for video cards and faster
i have the agp version and i get around 70fps using 800x600

Doubtful the transistion from pci to agp was not the best... they would be equal at most.
Im guessing its the cpu.. like bonzai said the K62 is not good for gaming.
Id check to see what color depth you are playing in.. see what your monitors refresh rate is at and in console type fps_max 100 and gl_ztrick 2

download wickedgl drivers it will increase it by 35-40 fps worked on mine. http://www.wicked3d.com/

hmm without them i run like 15-25fps with them im at 70fps what os are you running?
also try reinstalling both the wicked gl drivers and the card drivers
Also what Vid card do you have?
i have a voodoo 3 2000 PCI
that is your prob right there... voodoo 3 2000 is not a horsepower card :(

For one, i think that if you are going to play FPS games you need at least 1000 Mhz. I also suggest a 64 Mb grafics card. The ATI Radeon, GeForce 2 Ultra, and The GeForce 3 if you have $400! A minimal gaming standard would be 128 Mb RAM. Preferably SDRam, or DDRam. Which most people have. Windows 98 is still the fastest OS for gaming. But nobody offers it with new computers so go with Windows Me. Who has time to download drivers for Windows 2000. Not me :\ ! And yes boys and girls... the AMD chips are still the fastest for gaming! The Athlon 1.4 is as fast if not faster than the 1.8 P4! So for a stable, fast, and good grafics computer i would go with something like this: 1.2Ghz AMD Athlon. 128 Mb SDRam. SB Live!. 40 Gb Hard Drive. GeForce 2 Ultra. Windows Me. And olny install about 5 of your favorite games, and guess what... you have a super gaming computer for about $750. (less moniter)

no offense dude, but youre talking out of your ass :D . im playing with 733mhz p3 and 16mb voodoo 3 and getting 70 fps in cs (im his friend). and before this comp i've played on 500mhz with 8mb team fortress classic and that played fine (not sure fps). i also play quake 3 on this comp and that plays 100% perfect with no lag. same goes with max payne. i haven't found one game that plays badly yet.

Right now i am on a 500 Mhz, 128 Mb SDRAM, 8Mb Grafix card, 20 GB hard drive. I can play Unreal Tournament on this at about 50 frames per second. On my 1.2 Ghz 128 Mb SDRAM, 64 Mb Grafix card, 40 GB hard drive. I can play Unreal Tournament at about 90 frames per second. See the differnece. On my 1.2 Athlon the screen never gets choppy. its optimal performance. The game is superb on it. Im not saying that playing on a 400 Mhz P2 is a crime. But for a better gaming experience i suggest about 1000 Mhz, and a 64 Mb grafics card.... yadayadayada.... And im talking about games like Quake 3, UT, Doom... games that require fast machines. Ya you can play those 3 games on slow machines... go ahead im not holding you back, but if you want extreme satisfaction. use what i suggested. Ok...

just a little side note.
win2k professional isn't meant for server use, advanced server is, pro is used for office use and can be used for home use, which i use it for now.

And now to the dude telling me i look like an ass when i posted the 1000 mhz thing. Well think about it. Intel will have 2 ghz chips by the end of the year. At year 2005 Intel and AMD have said that they should have 10 Ghz chips. Suprising eh. yup. Well you see not only the processer speed but the amount of Ram you have also increases speed or decreases it in sum cases. From my own personal tests my 1.2 Ghz AMD athlon is considerably faster than my 500 Mhz Pentium 3. The startup time on my Athlon is 10 seconds compared to my pentium with a 24 second startup time. Yes my 500 Mhz computer can run Half Life, Unreal Tournament, Quake 3, Diablo 2, Serious Sam, and TFC. Game lag is there though. Even with 128 MB of ram on it. My AMD athlon has 256 MB ram and the faster processer makes it run games much faster. Game lag is almost non existant. I was just making a suggestion. I wasnt trying to make a law saying that all FPS games had to be run on 1000 Mhz or higher. Yes i know some people dont have the money right now to buy a faster computer. Some ppl may be fine with what they got. I went to Quake Fest last year, and about 2/3 of the computers there were AMD athlons and 2/3 of that were over 800 Mhz. Plus this was last year. As you can see the majority knows that 1000 Mhz and faster well is faster. Remember this was last year so 800- 1000 Mhz was max. Well anyways im tired of sum ppl pissing me off on this Message board. i posted on comment about what i thought is good for FPS games and like 10 ppl take offense. Um not really See its all in seasons... Ok ill break it down for ya.
Baseball is in the fall i play for school. And not u cant play 2 things in the same season for school. Racing in the summer. Along with track for a local track team. Then i play fall baseball in the fall. Then in the winter i play indoor lacrosse for school. I also am on the ski and snowboard team for school. this does not count as a sport so i can do 2 things for that season for school. happy now. And yes i do bench 180 max. How much can u press? I go to weight training after school a lot man. dont doubt me. My friend benches 210 regularly. hes like huge tho lol. Ya its weird isnt it. I like to play a lot of sports yet i am a hardcore gamer. Well life goes on.

Now your sugggestion just seem to be around the best computer you can buy. Now what kind of suggestion is that. Just say Buy the best computer from Dell or Gateway. Ping was right when he said that.
