I got broadband about 3 months ago through a local provider (starstream).. having had @home a months before I was initially really happy with the service.. (edit: 4mbps down 1.3mbps up - what it tested on dslreports)
The problems I'm having stump me.. when uploading for a period of time (anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour) my cable modem will loose the signal from the service provider.. and a few minutes later it will kick back in.. at first I believe it was caused by a signal that was too strong (wasn't quite sure though) so I called the ISP and they said it was a local problem (yeah right).. so after various diagnostics and all.. I decided to try and manually reduce the signal by installing a male-male connecter on the line.... (and anyone who's a video buff knows this kills a signal usually..) it helped some.. the disconnects don't last as long now... but they still occur when uploading. I've also tried various tweaks and other things. And thats just problem #1..
Problem #2 is the one that is more annoying :(
I have no idea what causes this.. or how to explain it.. Sometimes a send will just freeze.. (freeze or go 300bytes/s~)
and wont resume.. however.. I can sometimes resume it by reducing the packet size.. or having the person shave off a few KB from the file they have and resuming.. I've formatted.. changed drives.. scandisked (with surface scan, for bad sectors cause thats what I thought it was at first), and defragged.. nothing seems to work.. I am beginning to believe it has something to do with problem #1.. but I just don't know.
Please help me :(
System Specs:
Celeron 333A 256MB Ram running Win2k Pro Sp2
RealTek NIC 100/10 mbps (cable modem)
Sohoware NIC 100/10 mbps (to switch for home network)
The FTP is on g6 FTP (I've also tried serv-u and IIS)
If you're wondering it's mainly used by me and my friends. I store drafting files and other resources for school on it so I can remotely access it. The file-types vary, yet they all have the same problem.
