i just left a friends house after trying to get his DSL connection to work, i tried everything short of reinstalling the os, i did that a few weeks ago when the computer wouldn't even boot to 2k, everytime the computer boots up it says "couldn't initialize winsockets, ip address not valid" any ideas as to what could cause that? i know for a fact the ip address is right, and so is every other setting as i added/removed tcp/ip numerous times and had to retype them everytime
anyway, even though tcp/ip doesnt work, some strange workgroups and computers showed up in the network neighborhood, the only one that i could access belongs to a local heating and cooling company, its their file server, and the computer name was "server" the mydocuments folder is shared and accessible to EVERYONE who has internet access with my ISP, or atleast everyone who has DSL, not sure about dialup, but the mydocuments folder was full of files, i copied one or two to his desktop and opened them, they were memos from the company president about warranty's and other things, i didnt open any more as its none of my business, but this sure is strange, when i first set up my dsl a few strange ones showed up for a day or two and then disappeared but i couldn't access any of them, on his the one computer was open to anyone, the others that showed up in different workgroups all asked for passwords
