sorry if I´m duplicating, just need to sort this.

Trying to remove hardware from an NEC Visara 2650 Laptop,(winmodem listed under other devices),and every time I click on the + sign next to category to open, then click on the modem,´pooter flashes message telling me I´m trying to delete a category, and to select the hardware I´m trying to remove, even tho´the modem is highlighted.
Also the ´pooter won´t detect new hardware at startup.

any ideas please???????

Try using the Update Driver feature of the Device Manager to change the device's category to something like modems (you said it was listed under "Other Devices" right?), then remove it either from Device Manager or Control Panel's Modems applet. If you need details on how to do that, I need to know which OS you use.

If it's a winmodem it is possible that the software side of it is listed in add remov eprograms. Uninstall that first and then remove the device in Device Manager.

dude, what you have to do is to disable the plug N play feature in the system. To do this enter the system properties, device administrator, system device, and there look anything related to plug and play and delete it. Then delete the nec Hardware and reboot.. and then it wount load anything by default.

Disclaimer: do this at your own risk, you can screw up the computer. Also you wount get any further device detected unless you format your computer.

thanks for the replies people, but I think I must have forgotten to mention something.
When I go into Device manager, and highlight the modem,it brings a screen up saying something like "You cannot delete a hardware category, please click the + sign next to the category and highlight the item you wish to delete"

It does it on every single category and hardware item in device manager!!!!:(

My thinking is now that the registry is shot.I think the kids of the owner of the laptop, who have installed 15 games programs on the computer, have deleted them by going into program folder, finding the game folder and then sending them to the Recycle Bin,instead of going through Add/remove.
The reason being that every game I tried to delete,(all of ém)
came back with the same message ,namely,"cant find uninstall log file (.iso?).
Opinions?
Sorry for the long reply, just needed to

mike_es: can ask why do you want to delete it?
i suggest you to format that computer, i think if you have the problem with the hardware, then restore it when formating. Grab the drivers and do it.

You cant delete the category on the system properties, it deletes it self when there are no devices on it, so delte the modem and it will go away the category.

To asdf,

that`s the whole point,I CAN'T DELETE THE MODEM,because the system won´t let me:mad:
It keeps telling me to highlight a piece of hardware to delete, instead of a category, even when the modem is highlighted,in the modem category. The sportster winmodem HAS to be detected on startup, you cannot install with Install new hardware.

Formatting is not an option, the owner of the laptop has got too many important files,(including her Phd) on the computer, and she hasn´t backed her files up.

IF you are running win98, go to the run menu and type > regedit to get in the registry.

Then > HKEY_Local_machine\ENUM

Start poking around in the keys & subkeys under the ENUM folder. Some keys are obvious as to what they are, others you will have to look at until you find it.
You should find your modem in there eventually, then delete the key.

Good luck!

well thats a good way,, mmm i didnt think of it b4.

Mike: If you want to delete and not detect it in the start up you MUST disable the plug N' Play devices in the system properties or in the regedit... as you please.

i recommend you to do it though the regedit cuz you can save and do what ever you want and if not good then restore from the saved keys.
