Hello,
I have Adelphia Powerlink is Scranton, PA area. I used to have a Motorola (General Instruments) SurfBoard Cable modem. The other day, I called to complain that many of the internal tests were failing (http://192.168.100.1 page). They told me I needed a firmware upgrade. Well, they sent some kind of a signal to my modem and "bricked it" (fried it, actually).
They came to my house an hour later with a brand spanking new RCA modem. This one has a USB port (as well as a standard ethernet port), so I gave it a shot. I noticed that it doesn't always lease a connection, and sometimes it flat-out disconnects me-- with a DHCP lease lost message. And often, it takes forever to load a web page the first time I turn the computer on (subsequent web pages load fast after the initial page). Also, when I use my ethernet card, I never have this problem.
Is this typical when using USB instead of an ethernet card connection? If it's common, then I'll give it up and stick with the ethernet card. If it's not common, is there a way I can remedy these problems?
I'm running Windows 98 (1st edition) with USB support and my laptop is a Pentium 233 MMX. I am using the cable modem patches and get speeds anywhere from 500 to 1200, so I can't complain about my speeds.
Thanks,
-Tom
