Hi, I am trying to figure out how to tweak. I have read though some of the stuff here, and downloaded the speed guide patch, and @home patch. But, my speed doesn't seem to climb. So, I started playing with the RWIN with
256960, 128480, and 64240, still don't look very good.

I'm running under Window ME, 868 MHz, road runner cable, and I don't have cablenut. I try to go to the site, but the connection is refused.

I was wondering how fast can I really go, and how do I know if I'm at the optimum speed? and how much speed increase can I expect?

Here is my TCP/IP Analyser result:

TCP options string = 020405b40103030301010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 513920
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 20556.8 kbps (2569.6 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 8222.72 kbps (1027.84 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 54 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Please advise.
Thanks in advance!

Looks pretty good (that's two in a row now). Do you have a NIC?
How are your downloads now? Done any testing?

Ya, I think I have a NIC installed, is that the ethernet card? I swear I know that, blah..

I tried downloading some files from the same person a couple of times by changing the RWIN setting, but all of them gave me approximately 25 kb/s downloading speed. (Yes, i did restart after I edit) I was wondering if I can boost it up a lil bit. "Someone" told me he could donwload up to 1Mb/s after the tweak, I was just wondering if I did something wrong.
What kind of testing would be appropriate to determine my downloading speed? I went to a website with a speed meter, and the speed test gave me a result that varies between 877.4 and Infinity kbps, but why couldn't I downloa at that speed? Does the cap on the other end affects my downloading speed?

Thanks!

Probably the reasons you can't get to some sites is your content advisor, In IE Toolbar, click tools, internet options, tab at top, click content, slide slider all the way to right, at the end you want the content advisor enalbled

As for going faster, those online speed tests are not very accurate, allthough they would give me the case of the big head, try this:
Click on help page below in signature and follow directions exactly, please leave your OS and system specs if you have not done so.Also if you have Cablenuts adjuster installed I need to know that. On 2nd page of help page at bottom are some Tips and how to do speed test. Thank you and good luck.

How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as www.happypuppy.com and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to www.analogX.com and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average.
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.
(NOTE: at present time www.AOL.com seems to be fastest download site, at bottom download aol 6.0)
Or if you wish you may go to www.testmyspeed.com and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them.

I forgot to mention I'm using Netscape, cause Netscape seems to load up faster for me compare to IE. Anyway, I max. out the violent and nudity setting in IE Content advisor, still I can't get to your Help page, Lobo, that's mean I can't download cable nut, neither does Netscape work. May be it's just busy, i might try it later on.

Ok. I went to happypuppy.com, and download one of the demo "warcraft.exe" 1.4 Mb, and the speed was between 200 - 230 kbps. That was pretty good, for me. But, why can't I achieve that speed when I download in IRC. My average download speed in IRC is between 25-30 kbps, which is 1/10 of the speed I can achieve online. Hmm..happypuppy.com must be a real fast server.

I went to www.testmyspeed.com, and no test listed in Mississippi, the location I'm at. I also checked out the NetStat Live at AnalogX. Thanks for the direction, the software is pretty nifty, if only I can add another 0 to my incoming average speed.

Thanks Lobo & MadDoc!!

Cablenuts site and help page are down for aliilte while, red worm virus, but you may download Cablenut here (http://www.webattack.com/Freeware/system/fwsyspeed.shtml)

How to install Cablenut Software

Download and install soft ware, a box should come up with select your OS (Operating System) This is very, very important as it enters the correct registry entries.
This will also install Cablenut on your desktop, click on this and RIGHT click on adjuster, click on shortcut to desktop, this will put it on your desktop. Click on adjuster and to be sure to click on options at top, choose operating system and make sure you have selected right one, very important. OK, close out of that.
Next, inside Cablenut on desktop click on that, then ccs (Cablenut Custom Settings) select which type of connection you have, 56K, PPPoE or DSL, or Cable. Then select the setting you think best for your connection. 9x means Win 95/98/SE/ME, 2k would be Win 2000 and XP. Fast or normal, depends on you, try both and see which one you like best, just go back to top of adjuster click on file and select the ccs setting you like best, click on save to registry at bottom and REBOOT.
This will enter some values in adjuster, blank boxes only mean that default value is being used, click on save to registry at bottom (Do this anytime you change a value in adjuster and REBOOT or it will not work.

Note: Check back often for updates and new patches
Also on 2nd page of help page in my signature it tells you how to save your setting's. Installing Cablenut Software will remove any prior patches

Does anyone know the differences between Cablenut vs. Mini Speed?

Thanks!
