Hi,

I have a cable connection with @home. This is the problem: I am always losing connection to the internet after a few hours.

I need to reboot my pc in order to be able to surf again. I am using the default settings.

In the network properties I have set that I automatically get an IP address appointed. WINS has been disabled. Gateway properties is cleared. DNS configuration has been disabled also.

Basically those are the recommend settings by @home and work.

I don't want to lose my connection either. Rebooting after every few hours is very annoying! I have tried to set a static IP, but it won't go online then, because it won't find the DNS server.

I am using Win98 SE btw...

HELP! thx

Set your IP up dynamically. Set your computer name to the correct one and it will grab the IP.

it does grab my IP, but after a few hours I get disconnected from my cable connection.

I didn't have this problem in the beginning, I could be online 24 hours a day without rebooting. Now I need to reboot after every few hours, which makes downloading big files impossible.

Perhaps it's the drivers of my network card? my cable modem? windows got corrupted?

Anyone else had this problem before and know a working solution for this problem?

Thanks

Well, first of all, if you're setting up a static IP, you also should enter the gateway, and enter the DNS info. Those are items that DHCP also hands out, so if you set a static IP, you also need to assign those.

Instead of rebooting, to refresh your TCP info, Start ==>Run==>WINIPCFG select your network adapter in the drop down menu, hit release/renew. Doing so beats rebooting.

Is TCP/IP the only protocol loading for your NIC?

I would suggest setting yourself static and seeing if the problem persists. Like YeOldeStonecat mentioned you will need to enter your gateway and dns servers. You can get that info by running winipcfg and clicking more info once you have your card selected.

thank you for your replies. I only have 1 protocol: TCP/IP.

I tried to set a dynamic IP, but I don't know how to set my DNS properties. It needs a domain, host, etc...the info for that is not listed in WINIPCFG. Please guide me through this...

I tried to refresh it in winipcfg but that doesn't work..my pc needs to be rebooted. *sigh*

To simply connect you only need to enter a host name and the DNS servers into the DNS tab, any hostname will do. However to resolve names like "mail", "news", and "www", you will need the correct host and domain. Just try DNS with any hostname, if that fixes the problem let us know and we can show you how to get the correct host and domain.
