Yeah How when i try to use my friends modem a Toshiba PCx100u on my cable line nothing happens??
I thought all cable modems an cable lines are universal? Or is it that they program your line an modem to reconigze it??

Your modem has a certain set of routing parameters for your area. There is a specific upstream port at the CMTS that recognizes your modems MAC address. If you take the modem next door, chances are it will work. If your friend lives somewhere else, chances are that the modem will not work because his house is configured to go through a different node and upstream port to the CMTS.

Okay thanks for the info.

Another question
Now instead of making a new topic i was wondering about that particular modem.

Lets say i got one an used the usb port am I still able to share my connection to my other computer?? Cause that cable modem also has a ethernet card built it. So i would assume i just hook up the line that i share to it right? In other words can i still share my connection with these new modems?

the only way to share the connection is to get a second ip address or a router

the modem itself will not give connectivity to one computer through the NIC and one through the USB at the same time

it does not act like a router:nod:

So your saying the ISP programs each modem for a specific area? No way. It its a DOCSIS modem it will work anywhere, assuming the the ISP has the fiels to support it.

Why do you think you can go to a store, buy a modem, and no matter where you live, it will work?

nyr 56 you miss understood the answer the origional poster was trying to use his modem at his friends house across town and the modem would not work

the answer is that the modem needs to be PROVISIONED to a certain CMTS if it is not provisioned to that CMTS then that CMTS will not recognize it and will not pass traffic for that modem regardless of weather or not DOCSIS is the standard or not

also while DOCSIS is a standard that allows for intercompatability among several differant manufacturers brands of modems and headend gear it is incorrect to say that ANY DOCSIS modem will work on ANY DOCSIS compliant cable plant

the cable system operator MUST have the proper config files staged on its network for EACH SPECIFIC MAKE AND MODEL OF DOCSIS MODEM

without the prober config file the modem will not sync up

a GI surfboard 3100 does not take the same config file as an RCA DCM 225 even though they are both DOCSIS

if your cable company only supports one of those and not the other then you will be out of luck if you buy the wrong one even though they are both DOCSIS:cool:   :rotfl: :p :2cool:

But see right now I'm doing the 2 nics in one comp an one nic in the other sharing the connection.

I thought you could use these new usb/nic modems the same way.
So their is No way you can use these new modems to share a connection??

As Rodrod5 says, you need a router. ICS is a form of router. No reason why you can't use it to share a single connection.

Some folks like me don't like it. When you have a customer 30 miles away who likes to fiddle with the configuration a hardware router makes a lot of sense.

So YES you can share it using ICS? Just wanna make sure cause I'm not the smartest guy in the world.

yes you can share cable internet using ICS regardless of the type of modem:nod:

if you do use ICS then you SHOULD NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT USING THE USB as the connection from your modem to the host computer

a NIC and a USB connection with ICS will run right for about 18 hours then you will reinstall windows

you need to go with 2 NICS if you use ICS.......i personally think ICS sucks and is unstable but that is me

good luck
