hi peeps,
just a quickie,as the actress said to the bishop!
just setup a īpooter with network card,tcp/ip,ms family logon,ms network etc.,and Iīm a tad perplexed.I can ping all other comps on the network,(going thru a 16 port hub) but I canīt ping my adsl router/modem,and hence canīt connect to the internet.
any ideas?? Thanks.

Check the IP address and subnet of the cable modem. Make sure your pc is on the same subnet and has the cable modems IP set as it's default gw (this won't matter for pinging the modem, but it will if you want to be able to get to the internet).

Thanks but checked all that 4 times.gw and subnet mask are identical on all the comps, each has itīs own ip address.every other comp hooks up to internet, except this bugger!!
did a format and reinstall of win 98se,network card etc.,etc.,etc,
so it can't be a software problem.can it???

Can the pc that isn't working ping the other comps?

Yes, it can ping all the others, and it can also see them on the network, including all the network printers.
Iīm fixing this comp for a friend who has adsl, but with a 3com 4 port modem, and Iīve been trying to connect it to my network which uses my speedstream modem, but nothing.then disconnected my network and ran his modem directly thru my phone line, and still nothing.(removed dns addresses,ipīs etc. to try and get it to detect the settings, but, nuffin, nada, bugger all.
