@home recently (last few days) disabled my access to www.msn.com unless i use the proxy server on. i do know that you cannot use the home.excite.com site unless you have the proxy server on; but how can they censor msn this way.

all the other microsoft sites, such as moneycentral, hotmail, etc. are still accessible.

how soon will it be before @home censors all internet sites... or am i mistaken and this is msn's doings? is msn forcing @home users to go through the proxy?

@home tech support did not have an answer, except that proxy server on is required for all their subscribers to browse the internet. msn tech support is slow and no email answer yet.

anyone else having this difficulty and what is the workaround?

No problems here connecting to MSN with @Home and no proxy (haven`t used it for some time now). Have you tried clearing your cache and your cookies?

I think you are wrong.
I bet you have some bad data in your cache.
I have never installed any @home software, let alone never using the web proxy, and I have no problem accessing the Excite @home page or the MSN page.

Try this...

Go to your Internet Settings.
Go to The settings for Tempory Internet Files.
Change the setting for "Check for Newer Version of the Page" to "Every Visit to The Page".

You probably are on "Automatic" and have bad cached data on your computer.

Thanks for help advice, but I had already cleared cache and deleted all cookies and temporary internet files. Check for new page every visit is also set. I did it all again just to make sure.

Its still the same, I can go anywhere on the internet except to msn & @home (excite works), unless I turn proxy on. It could be something specific to our network here, because two other people in town have same problem. The @home tech even came over to one friend's house and tried everything until he finally said to completely reinstall win98 because it might be corrupted. That didn't work either, as she still has the same problem I do.

Some more info, don't know if it is related... the same day that msn was not accessible; I was not able to get any email, kept saying server was down. I called @home tech support and he (after verifying all software and network settings were correct) did something to access my cable modem and email immediately began working. I didn't know about msn problem until shortly later when I went browsing. That is what prompted the second call and another tech said proxy had to be on for internet browsing. We all know that is not true, because I don't use proxy (since last year) and everything else works fine.

I am open to more suggestions.

you mean "hosts" not "hosts.sam". hosts.sam is just a sample file...it has nothing to with anything...its useless.

Removing all references in the "hosts" file worked. Thanks for the idea. It got to he point that with proxy on or off it didn't matter. But everything works normal now.

I just want to clarify that I did track my original problem to a program called Broadband Wizard that did not clean itself of all file references when it was uninstalled last spring. To double check, I read posts in other web site forums from users that had the same problem. :D
