say that sharing file in within network is safe using NetBEUI protocol. But in order for all the computer on network to connect to the internet, they all must have TCP/IP protocol installed. Let say all the computer on network have both NetBEUI and TCP/IP protocal installed. Now, if you want Win98/ME/NT to see each other, you have to share something. if you turn no PRINTER and FILESHARING in network setting and share some thing. Which PROTOCOL did they use since there is no tell or setting to choose.

You use both. You set up TCP/IP for your internet settings, then add the NetBEUI protocol. In TCP/IP, go in to the bindings tab and unbind TCP/IP from File and Print Sharing and Client for Microsoft networks. Then go into NetBEUI and bind it to the above mentioned. Your PC's will see each other on the network just fine. By using NetBEUI, you seperate your file and print sharing from the same connection your internet uses, thus making it more secure and allowing you to turn on file and print sharing. It is always a good idea to use passwords on shared drives, and only share what is needed. I have my C drive shared as read only with a strong password. For read/write access, I set up a dedicated folder and use a password on it. It would also be a good idea to run a firewall like BlackIce or Zone Alarm, or better yet a router with built in NAT.

Do what ever is said in the post above.

At the end you have to go to the NetBEUI properties in each computer, and check it as Default Protocol, other wise you system will get confused.

The main reason to use such setting has to do with the characteristics of the protocol, NetBEUI can not be routed onto the Internet, so by connecting Printer, and File Sharing to NetBEUI, the network traffic can not get to the Internet.

how do I do this in Win2k. There is no binding to choose in win2k. I change my win ME comp and share files using NetBEUI. my win2k saw the share folder and able to access it. But if I share in win2k comp, it will still use TCP/IP protocol to share, won't it???

To change binding settings in Win2K, go to Network and Dialup connections\Advanced\Advanced settings. This is where you can select or de-select binding.
