Hey Guys.
This board gets the most attention, so i thought i would ask here. I am running win2000 and the other computer is 95. On my comp (2000) i can see all the other computers drives no problem. But on the other comp i cant see any of my drives. I cant even see this computer in network neighborhood. I havent turned file and print sharing on, as i have no clue how to. Btw, my internet sharing works, they can go on the net easy, and i can ping both computers back and forth, al that works good, i just dont know how to do this file and print sharing thing.
Any help is appreciated
Matt
This should be in networking.
But, make sure you have netbeui installed on both comps. I had that problem once, netbuei was my prob.

like napster, bearshare, scourExchange.....
in order for you to see other people and their sharing files and for them to see you, you have to SHARE something first.

Well how do i share it ?
sorry, i was just joking. just right click on FOLDER or DRIVE and choose SHARING... and click on NEW SHARE . type in any name. when this done, your win2k comp will pop-up on your network neighborhood.

Well, i was looking through my installed protocalls and stuff, and noticed i did not have file and printer sharing. Lol, anyway got it installed. Right clicked on drive and its all shared now, all is fine. Except.. when i go on the other computer and try and access my c:\ drive it asks for a password. I dont know where i set a password, or to change it ? Win2000 has some fancy stuff, and im new to it. So is there a password i set somewhere that im forgeting about, or do i still have to set this password ?|?|?
IM confused.. Please Help
in win2k, create a user the same one you use to log-on to win98/ME and same password. after share something, click on pemission and add that user. I recommend using the same username/password to login on to all your computer. then you won't have this problem.

In Win2k you have to enable the guest account. It is DISABLED by default as a security precaution. Under users in control panel. You will have to be logged into the Win2K machine as an Administrator level account to do this.

LOL- NTFS has NOTHING to do with your problem. Your Win9x machines can read networked NTFS drives just fine. If they couldn't, there wouldn't be a network anywhere that worked!!

You do NOT have to enable the Guest account, and if you care anything about security, you won't. The answer is in catngo's response- it's all about permissions. Create a matching account on your W2K box as he indicated, and set share permissions accordingly. Also, do not delete or modify the default permissions of the root drive share(s). They are administrative/system shares. If you want to share, create a NEW share (also can be entire root directory if you want- just needs to be a different one than $C$ share).
Assign rights to the share and user account(s) as you want them.

Whether you use the Guest account or an account named "Skippy" is irrelevant. The fastest way is to enable the guest acount. Providing he's using netbeui and not TCP/IP, and has unbound MS file sharing across TCP/IP it is just as secure as any other logon.
