I just installed cable broadband service and a new router. Previously I had an eight port hub (10 Mbps) to which I had connected three computers and an HP JetDirect print server.

Although the computers can network fine and all can access the internet ok through the router, none of the computers can now access the print server. The print server is the only device on the router which is not 100 Mbps. The LED lights on the router show that the printer server is physically connecting to the router.

The HP print server uses HP JetDirect software. Under this system, you set up the printer on each computer as a local printer and create a special HP port for each printer that is connected to the print server. The problem is that with the router, the print server doesn't show up at the local computers. Powering down the print serve didn't help.

Any ideas as to why the print server can't be seen through the router?

When you originally setup the print server, you probably set it up using TCP/IP. At that point, you gave the port an IP address. (for example, 10.0.0.3)

Now, with a router, you've changed the scope of your computers IP address, probably the standard class C 192.168.0.xxx or 192.168.1.xxx.

Since your computers are now in one IP scope, and the jet direct port is in another scope, they'll never see each other.

If the above it true, couple of ways. You can remember your old IP scope that the hp port was in, and still is in, change one computer to match that range, reboot then telnet to the hp port and manually assign it an IP in the new range, at which point you'll be disconnected, then change the computer back to the new router range (probably using the DHCP of the router)

Or you could do a hard reset of the HP port and set it up again, doing a search for it's MAC address (found on a little label on the bottom of the box)

You can print out a port configuration page to see what IP address it's set at.

it would be less of a headache for you to reset the print server, just look on hp's website or in the manual, then use the install cd to reinstall the printer, just print a test page from the print server to find its mac address

if you think this is complicated, you should try setting up a jet direct to work with netwear
