Hello,
Well im pretty much new to the computer world, i kno a lil of my info but not really much. (if that makes sense) Here is my problem:
I have 1 Cable connection and i want to hook 4 computers to it. I was told by a guy just to get a router and modem and 150' of CAT 5 cable and ends with the tool to crimp them on and it could be done. And now someone else has told me there is no way it could be done becasue i only have 1 IP addy and it wont split 4 ways....the way the 2nd persons told me to hook it up was with a hub and person #1 said i can do it legally
cuz i have 4 PCs I want to kno if its possible with the stuff i have bought or have i wasted my money? Also the 2nd person said i might beable to do it but not everyone could be on at the same time. What do i do? Things i have bought:

Cable Modem
Cable/DSL 4 Port Router
150' CAT 5 wire
RJ-45 ends
RJ-45 Crimper tool 4-6-8 pin

Will this work???
Thanks in advance

ok, i know a person or two who think like guy #2 and always tell me computer related stuff is or isnt possible contrary to what i know just to try and make me feel bad, that may not be the case here but anyway.

first, did you already buy the router modem and cable?

if so then go ahead to the link below, if not, you need a router, get the rt314 from NetGear, best buy has it for $99, it has a build in 4 port switch, which is better than a hub, and since you want to share between 4 computers it works out perfectly, since your a newbie, you should stick to premade cables if you haven't already bought it, if you have, try to take it back, if you want to use it though, im sure someone else will chime in and help,
you will need a network card in every pc, good ones can be obtained for anywhere from $10 to $200, you will get a lot of use out of netgear's, $25, but i would stay away from anything that says Wal-Mart or LinkSys or Network Anywhere/Everywhere on the box, and stay away from the word wireless, its more problems than its worth and costs more too

this link should explain the actual setup to a better degree

stupid me, didnt notice what was at the end of your post, yes you can do it with what you have bought, anyone here have a link explaining how to make the cables? everything else looks good, just follow the instructions on that site i listed, make sure you follow the hardware router directions and not the software or ICS directions

If you have a gateway router i.e. .....netgear rt314 or the linksys....whatever the modle number is (i use the netgear)
and enuff ethernet cord to get to all your machines and the ends to crimp on anf the crimper tool....

you can do it and it IS LEGAL

you not stealing bandwidth or anything with a router........your just dividing it up to the 4 machines. The router takes 1 IP addy and does whats called Network Address Translation..(NAT)
itll take the ip you get from your isp and translate it into like 254 private ip addresses.

and everyone can be on at the same time through the router

all my systems are on that way right at this very moment.

as far as making the ends......there is a standard on how to organize the wires in the rj-45 ends.....but....i just go alphabeticaly with the colors .....(Blue/blue white....brown/brown white.....green/green white......orange/orange white)
and i get full speed out of my 10/100 nics

the standard method is suppposed to reduce crosstalk in the line and some other things.....but ive never had it be an issue.

hope this helps you some

Thanks for all the help...and to ansewer more cloudy things about the post...i have got the CAT 5 wire the ends and the tool to cripm them on...as far as the modem....that is given to me when i sign up for service....and the router i have not purchased yet...i think i pry will go with the NETGEAR RT-314.....and as far as sticking to pre-made cables that wont work due to the distance i had to cover when i do this.....any with our ethernet cards they came in our computers....does anyone know the "STANDARD" way of puting wires into the RJ-45 ends? I guess that is the only question i have left.....Thanks
