View Full Version : How the heck should I partition this?

Oh goodness! I'm so lost. I just picked up a 30gig WD HD, and I dont know what to do. I didnt need the 30gigs, I was happy with 15 and 8. However, the 8gig was an ata33 and it really slowed down my system. My 15gig is a nice maxtor that I love and it's setup as 6gig for win98se and 8gig for backups, mp3's and games. My 8gig was used only for downloads before.
I need to find a way to split up this 30gig before i install it. I want a partition for mp3's, so I can put them all on my computer. I dont play games that much, so taht can be put wherever. I would like to install win2000 soon as a dual boot to make sure I like it, then I planned on reformatted everything and moving to that. I would like to have a little partition for my 'private collection' of things that I dont tell anyone about. On top of that, I need around 8 gigs for downloading. I like to keep my downloading seperate from my OS, to lower wear and tear from too much 'cross drive use'.
Anyone have any thoughts?

First questions - how many hardrives do you have now and do you have Partiton Magic?

I have partition magic, but I wont use it. I perfer to just use FDISK. I have actually have three hard drives, but untill I get a full size tower I can only use two. It's a heat issue to use all three with my promise ata66 controller card.

I have a 30 gig and a 9 gig - the 9 is for w2k/backups/OS testing -
3.5 2 and 3.5 the 30 is divided as 4 gigs for Win Me /CD Stuff/ programs for each OS separately/Documents or files.
But I use PM to adjust the partitons when needed via Win ME.
Why not just keep it simple and keep each partition under 8 gigs...that way you'll use the smaller cluster size and speed things up a bit...why not 5 6gig partitions. or one 2 gig for os and 4 7 gig partitions for whatever...or use the 2 gig for your little secrets unless it aint big enough. I also use FDISK alot so I'm there with you....when you do get a bigger case are you planning to go to a RAID setup?

I ended up going---
6gigs OS
8gigs songs
10gigs hotline
12gigs games etc
6gigs backups, downloads to save and 'special'
I dont plan on going raid with the new case because I dont have a RAID card nor a RAID mobo. I only plan on the new case for more cooling and for a third hard drive. My 3rd hard drive is rather old and will only be used for long term backup and documents. I might even encrypt the whole third drive.

I use scramdisk right now, but to encypt a whole drive I might have to use something else. That program is amazing though and very easy to use. Have you ever heard of it?

it creates a file, called whatever you like and however big you'd like it. Nothing can open this file except for scramdisk, and they have 23 differant type of encryption you can choose from. When you open scramdisk, find the 'file' you created, you then enter up to four differant passwords to unlock the file. It actually turns into a full virtual hard drive, then you can just swap files around. You can then either 'dismount' the file or when you shutdown it'll disappear back into the file. 99.9% of people would have no idea it was even there. They might try and open the file, but it cant be opened with anything.
