Need help tweaking my cable modem. I've read this forum for a long time and have done most suggestion possible with no luck. I get a slow steady download rate of 180kbps, trying to tweak it to at least close to 300kbps. I've already intsalled cablenuts and the patch for win2k. Tried most rwin numbers but ended up with similar results ( 64240, 438000, 449680, 467200, 470120 , 513920, 522680, 524176, 63184, 481800, 487640, 502240, 210240 and 280320). What else can I do to speed up my connection. Any help is appreciated. thanks

If that is the max speed of your cable that may be your cap.

How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as www.happypuppy.com and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it , just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to www.analogX.com and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed, really all you need on Net Stat is incoming data, incoming totals and Local machine, right click on Net Stat anywhere, stactics and check these 3 items, the rest need not be checked unless you want them, all you care about is average.
Put system defrag in scheduled tasks to run everyday.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.
(NOTE: at present time www.AOL.com seems to be fastest download site, at bottom download aol 6.0)
Or if you wish you may go to www.testmyspeed.com and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them.

xbit,

I usually get burst speeds of up to 1.5mbps then drops down rapidly to 180-200kbps. Is there a way I can maintain this speed of 1.5mbps. Or am I out of luck?

If you get a program like download accelerator. I know its spyware but i don't care as long as it works.

Lobo,

I've done the speed test many times at aol downloading aol 6.0. I get a couple speed bursts then slows down to 180-200kbps. Any further advice?

I would try larger RWIN, try 524176, 531440 or 554800:) :)
If your using Cablenuts adjuster, put numbers here:

Bring up Cablenuts adjuster inside 4.2 on desktop the numbers below go in 3 places in W2k and XP, they are: DefaultReceiveWindow, TcpWindowSize, GlobalMaxTcpWindowSize, take out number that is in there and put in one of these, 1 at a time, try: above

At bottom click save to registry, and REBOOT or it will not work. On help page below in signature, 2nd page, at bottom are Tips and How to do Speed test,
Good luck

xbit,

I've tried many programs like download accelerator, and downloading multiple files. Yet I can never get downloads steady at near 300kbps. This isn't too much of a speed increase to ask, is it?

Do you have newest router firmware:

Netgear released new firmware for the RT 311/314 Dated 04 Jun 2001:

If you don't, go to their web site and download and install:) :)

Have you tryed alot of tweaks that are still in your computer as something is holding you back, conflicting with something else, I use as few as possible and if I try something and I see no improvement, I take it out right then, so I don't forget, this also applies to system INI tweaks:) :)

Do you think I'm capped at 200kbps. I'm sensing i'm out of luck with nothing left possible to do. So much for tweaking, it was fun anyhow. thanks lobo and xbit and eveyone else.

Turn everything off using resourses and take full test at www.pcpitstop.com click on internet at end of test and tell me what bandwidth down is:)

Run the T3 or higher test. 1000KB for the T1 is too small and gives innacurate results.

Lobo,

Here is the test result i got.

Measured Performance

Connection Type: Cable
Rated Speed Tested Speed Units
Bandwidth Down 1500 815 Kbits/sec
Bandwidth Up 768 108 Kbits/sec
Ping Latency 120 66 milliseconds
Receive Buffer Size --- 554800 bytes

Seems my upload is slightly slower than expected. Anything interesting that you see?

Try an Rwin of 186880. Seeing how low your speeds are now this Rwin could only help.

If possible disable Whcp and DNS.
Allocate the least amount of bindings to your TCP/IP protocol as possible. Disable proxy if you have not done so previously.

Like lobo said:

Best times to test are at night: 1:30-4:30 am
Be sure that only Explorer is running (just take a look in the system tray to be sure)

PcPitstop is a good area to test your speed, although it pings a little high on my connection.

Best of luck.

HalfLifer

If his speeds are low, and possible packetloss with a high rwin, why go higher?

Try 64240.

Azura,

I am in exactly the same boat. Use the same Toshiba modem, and RWIN's from high to low change NOTHING. I have the nic on separate IRQ and even alloted 4 megs to it. I have manually adjusted the registry, used standardized cablenut settings and fiddled with everything possible. noone here has yet to offer a solution. Is it possibly the modem itself? When I used an RCA modem with comcast @home my times were much faster. I have a question about the TCP/IP analyzer on this site..exactly what good is it? all it does it tell you settings. It only changes readings as you change settings, the numbers it gives you for bandwidth are fantasy and never reflect real readings. could do the test a hundred times and still get:

(1)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 22425.6 kbps (2803.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 8970.24 kbps (1121.28 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

(2)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 22425.6 kbps (2803.2 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 8970.24 kbps (1121.28 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

etc, etc, etc with my current RWIN of 560640

These results are only based on the RWIN you use..the higher you put in the higher number you will get out. So where does this test affirm (or dissafirm) anything relevant to your speed? Or, is it not meant to do that?

Lobo
07-18-01, 05:19 PM
The test has nothing to do with speed, it tells us if patches are in and setting's that may be off

Lobo,

Since the first day I have this cable internet service, my download rate has always been the same. Averaged around 180k and never topped 200 at a steady pace. I don't quite understand what you mean by me having put something in my system. My system is basic like everyone else here. Nothing fancy. Several times when I have refomatted my computer, I tested internet connection with my cable modem before finish installing most hardware, still posted same result. Just can't seem to up the speed.

Newer modems USUALLY increase speeds

When @Home switched from COM21 to RCA DCM215's, my speeds doubled.
Now when I get my hands on XP :D

ANyways, post back results when you try out the new modem.
