I have read about ping times, but what is it that you ping to get meaningfull results? Should I contact my ISP to find out? I have Adelphia Powerlink in Westlake, Ohio (Cleveland suburb).

ping any web-site
goto your command prompt (if your on windows) and type:
ping www.yahoo.com

type:
ping /? for a list of options inside the ping int.

Thanks.

I tried this from work, and all four requests time out and I ge 100% packet loss. Is this maybe because I'm behind a firewall (NASA)? Also, when I type ping /? it says Unknown host /?.

I should have also asked before; how do you ping in Linux?

Type "man ping" and that should give you more info than you ever wanted to know about it. The syntax is always "ping <host/domain name>" or ping <ip address>. If you are firewalled that still may not work. Some gov't entities are almost more concerned with what gets out as what gets in...
