Listen to this story...

For about three weeks, my @home service has been down due to a thunderstorm. Finally, last saturday, a comcast installer came and replaced the faulty modem with a new Surfboard 4100. At first, I couldnt get online. It was because they had me on the wrong node. So they gave me a new hostname and fixed it all up and I wa up and running again. 6 hours later, I had problems getting online. It seems that everytime I would power cycle the modem, I would get back online with no problem but would then lose the connection 1 minute later. While all this was happening, I had my computer set up statically. DHCP worked earlier also. So I looked up my IP address and I found that the hostname does not match the one that I was given. So I called comcast and they are currently re-provisioing my account. Any ideas of what happened??

Welcome to Speedguide!

Two possibilities -

1) @Home set you up incorrectly.

2) Somebody set their system up for static IP and used the IP which the DHCP server is trying to assign to you. That person is probably complaining because he has the same problem as you do - you keep knocking him offline.

Moral: Don't ever set a machine up as static unless told to do so by the ISP. Just makes a mess for you and others.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I just called @home and they finally fixed the problem.

They had my new modem account on the Cable TV account, not my internet account. So the rep that I spoke with re-provisioned my modem and moved it over to the inernet accout.

Now it works great!

Thanks!
