View Full Version : older cable modem
My cable modem is a Motorola CyberSurfr made in 98. Would a newer model make any difference for me? Its a rental from the cable company. I've had it since 98. Also I hook up my system to a 10Mb Linksys hub and was wondering if it would make any difference getting a 10/100 or a router. I do have a second pc but I rarely us it for the internet.
Thanks,
Jason
Is the older modem a DOCSIS modem.
On Motorola's site it shows the newer version of it as being proprietory.

To keep or not to keep:
If you modem provides you with good speeds, you have your answer. There are many times that upgrading to a DOCSIS modem will actually reduce your upload. Some of the older Motorola modems are uncapped on the upload side. If you are not capped, I wouldn't swap it in.
On the flip side, converting to a DOCSIS can have some advantages for troubleshooting and diagnostics. The old Motorola modems came without an IP address or an internal diagnostic page.
I'll let somebody else get to the router question. Doesn't make sense to me if you rarely use the other PC.

motorola cybersurfer modems are not docsis. however, speaking from experience, the motorola, when on a reliable network segment, is the best and fastest modem out there. my isp will literally need to drag it out of my house to get me to switch to a docsis model.
the 10/100 would not make any difference other than transfering files between each of your computers, assuming that each one has a 10/100 nic. you would not realize any internet performance increase.
Thanks guys thats pretty much what I was thinking but wanted a little reassurance from those who frequent the board.

Yeh, I have a Motorola as well and it has been very good to me. Speeds are good, reliable, etc. If I ever am forced to switch, it will be to an SB3100 because it has the internal diagnostic page and it has more lights for troubleshooting. And, because Motorola bought GI a while back (I believe last year) the SB3100 is now a Motorola product as well.

Yep - I'll agree as well. My Motorola CyberSurfr was made in December 1996 I think - never skipped a beat. Sub 10ms pings to alot of hosts in the same city, 25km from the CMTS.
As said earlier, the only advantage with a DOCSIS in a typical situation will be the internal status page, and fancy stuff like that. Operationally you won't notice much difference.
